With just under two weeks before The Rookie bows on ABC, series star Nathan Fillion sits down to discuss the show in a new video interview.

The series, which premieres on Oct. 16, sees Fillion taking on the role of John Nolan, the newest and oldest cop on the force.

After a traumatic experience prompts Nolan to change the course of his life, he finds himself pursuing his dream of joining the LAPD.

However that dream is tested by his superiors who suspect their new charge is at best a walking mid-life crisis, and at worst someone who could put the lives of his peers at serious risk. Nolan soon realises he will have to be better than the rest in order to prove himself to his training officer and the other rookies in the precinct.

Below, Fillion discusses not only his TV character, teaming up again with Castle co-showrunner Alexi Hawley, and his experience of police training, but the real John Nolan, the man behind the inspiration for the series.

The Rookie stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Richard T. Jones as Sergeant Wade Grey, Titus Makin as Jackson West, Mercedes Mason as Captain Zoe Andersen, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Afton Williamson as Talia Bishop and Eric Winter as Tim Bradford.

Alexi Hawley is writer and executive producer.
