New Lord of the Rings IP Holders Could Make Spinoff Movies Focused on Characters Like Gandalf or Aragorn

Fans are gearing up for the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power this September, but there is some new update from the new holders of the LOTR IP Embracer Group.

In a new report, it has been revealed that Embracer has entered into an agreement to acquire Middle-earth Enterprises, and they could be planning to make spinoff films based on beloved characters from the franchise. It reads:

Other opportunities include exploring additional movies based on iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, Eowyn and other characters from the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and continue to provide new opportunities for fans to explore this fictive world through merchandising and other experiences.

For now, it feels like things are still in very early stages, so we shouldn’t expect any kind specifics any time soon. That being said, I’m sure there are a lot of fans who are already curious which character could get their own spinoff. Surely Ian McKellen is too old to be running around as Gandalf again, and even Viggo Mortensen didn’t return for The Hobbit because he thought it didn’t make sense in the timeline.

That being said, it’s possible that other actors could take on the role, like with Galadriel in The Rings of Power. I don’t know how interesting a Gollum movie could be, but apparently he can be the protagonist of a video game.

If you ask me, the LOTR fanbase is too hyper-critical that meddling with any specific characters could lead to sure-fire internet backlash. Amazon actually did the smart move by basing their series in a timeline that doesn’t have much detail.

We don’t know which character could get a solo film, but in the meantime, fans wait for Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power which is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 2.
