A New 'Star Wars' Trilogy is Coming, Created by 'The Last Jedi's' Rian Johnson

We haven’t even seen “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” yet, but we’re already locked in for another trilogy created by Rian Johnson himself. The past two years have been a kind of a renaissance for the entire “Star Wars” franchise, with a couple of spin-offs in the calendar. The present trilogy was kicked off by J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens,” and this December comes Johnson’s movie. It’s a good year for solid “Star Wars” fans, and we can’t help but burst out in excitement.
Lucasfilm reports in a press release that Johnson will create and kick off the first episode of the new “Star Wars” trilogy. He is set to write and direct, with Ram Bergman attached to produce. “As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud,” the statement read. “In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy also praised Johnson’s work ethic in making “The Last Jedi.” According to Kennedy, everyone loved working with him on set. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career,” Kennedy said. “Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
It’s possible that the executives at Lucasfilm liked “The Last Jedi” so much that they are confident that audiences will love it. However, just because the studio liked it so much doesn’t mean that it’s a guarantee that the audiences will too. But whatever the case may be, It’s definitely exciting to know that Johnson will be spearheading a whole new trilogy that would greatly expand the new “Star Wars” universe.
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hits theaters December 15th.
