Director Yorgos Lanthimos had delivered some pretty artsy films with The Lobster, The Favourite, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and now he’s re-teamed with Emma Stone for a new movie called Poor Things, and it looks like a painting come to life.
Watch this:
Here’s the official description:
From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
If you’ve watched Lanthimos’ films before, you’ll know that he’s pretty much an arthouse director and his stories aren’t always told in a conventional manner. With Poor Things though, it really looks like he’s embracing the fantasy aspect of the story, and I’m excited to come with Emma Stone in this journey full of colors and crazy visuals.
Admittedly Emma Stone has been slowing down in the last few years with Cruella being her only live-action role in 2021, but I guess this has opened up room for her to really hone in on projects that she’s passionate about. Hopefully Poor Things manages to be a wonderful return for her on the big screen.
Poor Things is set to release in theaters on Sept. 8.
