Princess Diaries 3 is in Development
Published 2 weeks ago
Before Anne Hathaway was starring in artsy films like Brokeback Mountain and Interstellar, she was unwitting royal Mia Thermopolis in Disney’s The Princess Diaries. The film manages to keep its cult status among Disney fans, and it looks like the studio is ready to once again go back to the kingdom of Genovia.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that a third Princess Diaries film is in the works, and it will be a continuation of the story of Anne Hathaway’s Mia. Aadrita Mukerji is currently attached to pen the script, but Anne Hathaway still has no deal to return; it is worth noting though, that she has publicly stated her support for a third movie.
Though Hathaway is considered to be the star of the franchise, a lot of fans will probably be asking about Julie Andrews reprising her role as the Queen of Genovia. At 87-years-old it does feel that Andrews is strictly retired, not even appearing in Mary Poppins Returns, but she did have that voice cameo in Aquaman, which was kind of odd, but hopefully it means that she’s willing to work on movies again in some capacity.
Who knows, maybe the plot can follow Mia who could be up for the position of queen after her grandmother dies. With the death of Queen Elizabeth still fresh in the mind, I think a movie about Mia taking on the throne could feel timely for audiences.
Or not, I’m just guessing.
No release date has been announced for the third Princess Diaries movie.
