Release Date for Live-Action One Piece Allegedly Leaked

Cowboy Bebop may have crashed and burned, but Netflix is still out trying to make the perfect live-action anime adaptation. Next series that’s going up to bat is One Piece, and we may have gotten a release date leaked for the show.

As per What’s On Netflix, One Piece is set to come to Netflix on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023. We have no official confirmation from the streaming service, but the release does line up with the marketing and the promised 2023 release date.

We don’t have any official details for the show now, but it looks like the series is only going to follow the first few arcs of the manga, what with Luffy slowly gathering the members of his crew. With this first season, it looks like we’re going to be getting Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji. It’s very likely they could be saving Chopper for the next season; where hopefully they’ll get a bigger budget.

Admittedly, shows like Death Note and Cowboy Bebop didn’t need as much CG as something as cartoonish and animated as One Piece, so I wonder if Netflix was able to fork over the cash to really make the series look as impressive as it should. Not only would they need the CG for some outrageous locations, but they would need a lot of work just making Luffy look as cool as he does whenever he activates his stretchy powers.

Here’s the official synopsis for the series:

An alternate version of Earth, and one that is currently in the midst of the ‘Golden Age of Pirates’. Ruthless cut-throat pirates rule the seas, and only the strongest have the chance to lay claim to the mythical treasure known as ‘One Piece’ that was left behind by the greatest pirate of them all Gol D. Roger.

Years after the death of Gold Roger, a young boy by the name of Monkey D. Luffy has dreams of raising his own crew, finding One Piece, and declaring himself as Pirate King. After eating a devil fruit that grants Luffy the power to make his body like rubber, it gives him enormous strength and agility. When Luffy finally comes of age, he sets sail from Foosha Village in East Blue and sets upon his grand adventure to become the next Pirate King.

No official release date has been announced for One Piece, but watch out for it on Netflix sometime later this year.
