Star Wars: The Last Jedi Title Meaning Revealed

As soon as the title for “Star Wars: Episode VIII” was revealed to be “The Last Jedi,” fans were sent into a frenzy trying to decipher what it meant for the space saga, with a couple of convincing fan theories circulating over the internet. Some say that the last Jedi could either be Luke, Rey or Leia; or that it might refer to a remnant group of Jedi left alive from Kylo Ren’s Jedi purge.

‘The Last Jedi’ Title Was Meant To Keep People Guessing

Turns out, the title was meant to be mysterious on purpose. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy revealed that “The Last Jedi” title was meant to be “intentionally ambiguous.” Director Rian Johnson also took time to explain the rationale behind the title decision.

“That was the very first thing, when I had not even written the script. When I was coming up with the story, I had that title. So I’ve had that title in my head now for years. I was so terrified that someone would guess it—it seemed like an obvious title. Every time a fake title would leak, I would hold my breath and click on the link and be like, ‘Oh no, did they get it?’ But luckily, we were able to put it out clean.”

Johnson then went on to discuss how fans might be looking at things the wrong way, suggesting that it might not even be a question of “the Last Jedi” being Luke or Rey.

“I never thought that [whether the title references Luke or Rey] was going to be the question. I guess partially because the answer—and this is going to sound like I’m being coy, but I swear I’m not—is, you do have to see the movie. It’s not as simple as saying, ‘It’s this person—ha-ha!’ It is a little more complicated than that. I guess I can say this, that when—no, I’m not going to say anything.”

The director also gave a hint on how to interpret the title, taking off from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The end of Episode VII refers to Luke, “because of the notion that this religion has died out and he is the last of them.”

Until then we have about six more months left to wait before we finally find out what the title implies visually when “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hits theaters December 15, 2017.
