'The Suicide Squad' Adds 'Pitch Perfect 2's' Flula Borg to Cast Roster

James Gunn’s take on The Suicide Squad is still a long way from production, but it never ceases to build up its steady roster of cast members. The latest addition hails from the acapella groups of Pitch Perfect 2, German actor and DJ Flula Borg (via Deadline).

Borg is also an accomplished comedian with a number of roles in animated comedy films. Among his voice role credits are Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Ferdinand, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and the upcoming Trolls World Tour premiering April 17, 2020. He recently released a single with American comedic music group Ninja Sex Party, titled “Self Care Sunday.”

With the actor’s role kept under wraps, Borg comes as a welcome piece in the puzzle that Gunn is assembling to get the movie off the ground. There’s one little detail about his role, though. Borg will be “playing a love interest to one of the characters” in the upcoming relaunch of the Suicide Squad. Returning cast members include Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg.

The newcomer roles are also unknown, but it seems to be an interesting group of anti-heroes. Borg joins Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), and Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher) as the new faces in Gunn’s version.

The new Suicide Squad is written and helmed by Gunn. The Guardians of the Galaxy director will have a new take on the DC supervillains who are recruited by the government to do the dirty work not fit for any superhero. Charles Roven and Peter Safran are producing.

The Suicide Squad is being branded as a “relaunch” after Gunn was handed the directing duties in January. The original 2016 film, directed by David Ayer, grossed $746 million worldwide, making it a box office hit despite poor reviews and critic consensus. It was quite the star-studded film with Will Smith, Cara Delevigne, and Jay Hernandez headlining along with Robbie, Davis, Courtney, and Kinnaman.

The Suicide Squad is scheduled for an August 6, 2021 release date.
