The Last Voyage of the Demeter Promises a New Spin on the Dracula Legend

We just got the release of Renfield last weekend, but Universal is already gearing up for another property featuring Dracula.

Check out the trailer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter starring Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, Corey Hawkins, and Aisling Franciosi:

Here’s the official synopsis:

Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London.

Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.

It’s actually pretty neat that the film managed to get Liam Cunningham to play the captain in the film. You’ll best remember Cunningham as Ser Davos Seaworth a.k.a. The Onion Knight in Game of Thrones, where he played a seafaring smuggler.

Though Universal wasn’t able to launch their Dark Universe with Dracula Untold, it has opened the door for more experimental takes on classic movie monsters like Renfield and The Invisible Man. Hopefully Demeter will manage to extend on the Dracula lore, but I’m happy just to have one self-contained period horror film.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is set to come to cinemas on Aug. 11.
