Uncoupled: Neil Patrick Harris is a Gay Man Tackling a Middle-Aged Single Life in New Trailer

Neil Patrick Harris may have played a caricature of a straight person in How I Met Your Mother, but he’s ready to fully embrace his gay identity in this upcoming series from Netflix.

Here’s a new trailer for Uncoupled:

Here’s the series description:

Michael’s life seemed to be perfect, until his husband blindsided him after 17 years of marriage. He has to confront the nightmares of losing his soulmate and suddenly finding himself as a single gay man in his mid-40s.

While we’ve had series tackling mid-life crises before, it’s kind of an interesting twist to have it happen to a middle-aged gay man. I think Harris is perfectly cast in the part, and based on his comedic chops as Barney Stinson, we can expect more of the same when it comes to his character Michael in this show.

Besides Harris, the series also has some impressive showrunners at the helm. Jeffrey Richman had been executive producer for Modern Family for years and had won six Primetime Emmys. Darren Star has one Emmy, and he’s written for shows like Sex and the City and Emily in Paris.

Though LGBTQ+ characters have mostly been taking the sideline when it comes to mainstream media, it’s great that we’re getting more shows with them being the main characters. Besides Uncoupled coming out later this month, we also have the Billy Eichner-fuelled Bros which comes out in September.

Uncoupled comes to Netflix on July 29.
