Better Call Saul: Bob Odenkirk on Saul and Kim’s Fate After the Finale

[SPOILERS FOR THE FINALE OF BETTER CALL SAUL]

After years of ‘getting away with it’, Jimmy McGill finally faces the music in the finale of Better Call Saul and finds himself incarcerated. Though the episode does leave open-ended, Bob Odenkirk speculates what Jimmy and Kim’s fate would have been after the cameras stopped rolling.

Talking to EW, Odenkirk was asked if the two would see each other again, to which he replies:

“I think [Kim] comes to see [Jimmy]! I think she comes to see him once a year — every other year at the least. And I think he helps a bunch of guys in prison to get out who are innocent, or he helps shorten their sentences. He gets treated really well. And I don’t think he gets out early…-ish. I don’t think he gets out. I don’t know what kind of dispensation they have for an 80-year-old, but I believe they have some, once you get to be that age where you can do something else. But I think he’s kind of the king of the prison because he’s a really, really good lawyer and a great lawyer for the kind of people in there. And he puts that to good use, probably even does some good work, like, genuinely good work. And then I think they see each other and I think he thinks she should stay married to that guy and have a life. I don’t know what she does, though. She doesn’t seem very happy at the water place.”

Seeing that Kim was actually miserable in Florida, it’s curious what kind of future the character will have. Though she has absolutely no chemistry with her husband, we do get to watch Kim slowly coming back to the legal world where she volunteers for the local legal clinic. She may not be an attorney anymore, but she can still help people who she thinks deserve it.

So far, a lot of fans have loved the finale, and though it’s not as explosive as Breaking Bad, the character work was nothing short of phenomenal. Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould may be closing the book on the ‘Methverse’, but maybe there’s room for some exploration a long way into the future.
