Disney CEO Confirms A

Disney CEO Bob Iger admits his mistake in oversaturating the market with the annual release of one Star Wars movie, saying that it was “a little too much, too fast.” Despite this, the next film won’t be as far far away.

Iger confirms in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that they will be slowing down the supposed yearly releases. The latest Star Wars movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, had an underwhelming performance, hitting only around $400 million at the box office. It’s good—but not for a Star Wars property.

Iger says that fans “can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean [they’re] not [going to] make films,” Iger also adds that J.J Abrams is currently working on Episode IX, and that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss is set to develop their own sagas in the coming future.

“And we are just at the point where we’re going to start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s,” Iger said. “But I think we’re going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.”

The yearly releases of these films have been somewhat overwhelming for some fans, and a number of them believe that the quality of the movies since Disney’s acquisition of the franchise has dwindled. Perhaps the less frequent releases will help with the fans’ Star Wars fatigue.

Despite the apparent slow down of the franchise, it is still set to expand with the number of upcoming Star Wars projects. These include the Obi-Wan standalone movie, Episode IX, another original trilogy by Rian Johnson, a live-action TV series from Jon Favreau, and the recently-announced animated series Star Wars Resistance.
