Freelance: John Cena and Alison Brie Team-Up for Action Comedy

Alison Brie may not be returning as Zoya the Destroya anytime soon, but she is teaming up with former pro-wrestler John Cena  for an upcoming buddy action comedy.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the former GLOW and Peacemaker stars have been tapped to star in Freelance with Taken director Pierre Morel at the helm. Jacob Lentz’s script tells the story of an ex-special forces operator (Cena) who is hired by a journalist (Brie) who is trying to save her career by interviewing a dictator. A military coup erupts in the middle of the interview, and Brie and Cena (as well as the dictator they’re interviewing) have to team-up and escape the jungle with a country’s military at their tail.

While a capable young woman surviving a jungle with her bodyguard played by a pro-wrestler sounds a lot like the plot of Disney’s Jungle Cruise, we should expect something a bit more mature with the director of Taken behind the camera. Brie and Cena have also proven themselves to be very good when it comes to R-rated humor; unlike Emily Blunt and the Rock who are admittedly too kid-friendly when it comes to their brands.

We don’t know what this movie looks like yet, but Brie and Cena should be a fun team-up. Let’s just hope they don’t get the forced romance like Blunt and Johnson did in Jungle Cruise.

With production set to begin later this month, it’s likely Freelance will release sometime later in the year or early 2023. As of now, no release date has been announced for Freelance.

In the meantime, you can catch Cena in Peacemaker now in its first season on HBO Max.
