Is This the Plot of the Barbie Movie?

With set photos of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling coming out online, a lot of people are pretty curious for what’s in store in the Barbie movie. While rumors have come out of some elements of the plot, we may have the full story description.

Nothing official has been announced by Mattel yet, but the description definitely tracks for the rumors surrounding the movie. I’ve speculated that Barbie and Ken had no idea there were different versions of themselves that existed, but the synopsis confirms that they already knew about ‘Barbieland’, and the story is about them exploring what’s outside of it; also Will Ferrell is the evil CEO out to get Barbie and Ken.

It sounds like a pretty fun premise for a kids movie, but with Greta Gerwig at the helm (and Noah Baumbach co-writing the script), I think there’s going to be some sharp criticism there for Barbie as an icon and what she means to the Feminism. Sure, she encouraged a lot of young girls to be successful and independent, but at the same time, she also promoted unhealthy body standards.

The movie is still set to come out next year, so it could be a while before we get an official teaser. With the property being one of Mattel’s largest (if not the largest), you would think they would want to start promoting the film as early as December.
