The Buried Giant: Guillermo del Toro Announces Next Project with Netflix

Guillermo del Toro had only recently gotten into stop-motion animation with Netflix’s Pinocchio, but it looks like the director is ready to push forward with even more animated projects for the streaming giant.

Deadline reports that del Toro is currently in development for his next project for Netflix called The Buried Giant, which is based on a fantasy novel from author Kazuo Ishiguro. Here’s the story breakdown:

The novel follows an elderly Briton couple, Axl and Beatrice, living in a fictional post-Arthurian England in which no one is able to retain long-term memories.’

ShadowMachine, the same studio that worked on del Toro’s Pinocchio film, is said to be coming back for the production of The Buried Giant. Besides the announcement, we don’t have a look at any key art or concepts as of now.

“The Buried Giant continues my animation partnership with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a medium to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds,” says del Toro, “It is a great honor and greater responsibility for me to direct this screenplay which Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel.”

With 2022 having three Pinocchio movies competing with one another, del Toro’s version undoubtedly came out on top. Admittedly the film isn’t perfect, but it does offer del Toro an opportunity to improve on the method, especially when it comes to his next project.

As of now, The Buried Giant still has no release date, but you can check out Pinocchio now streaming on Netflix.
