Arcane Season 1 Episode 9 Recap - The Monster You Created

After the Raid

Jayce shuts the eyes of the dead youngster at the Shimmer facility. Vi tells her he didn’t have a choice, and there’s more they have to stop. Jayce’s conscience is weighing on him. She tells him he’s always been a part of it. He wants to stop, but Vi isn’t finished yet. They have a standoff with both weapons armed. Jayce backs down and leaves, telling Vi she can’t make it alone.

Vi punches the Shimmer-holding tank.

Sevika and Silco inspect the raided facility. They are surprised by the topside’s boldness. It turns out one of the dead boys was the son of a Chem baron: Renni. She berates Silco for Jinx’s failure to protect them.

Old Wounds

Viktor stares at his glasses, crying at his failure. He sees one of Miss Young’s letters addressed to him; he takes it and reads what’s written. He staggers towards the Hexcore and takes one of the chairs to destroy it, but he hesitates. The Hexcore glows and makes him fall to his feet.

Enraged, Mel goes to Ambessa. She tells her to stay away from Jayce and Piltover. Ambessa reveals the one who killed Mels’ brother does not intend to stop and has more resources than they do. They need a piece of Hextech weaponry.

Mel is angry with her mother for instigating the war. She asks Ambessa why she was thrown away from the family. It turns out Mel’s presence made her feel weak in decision-making. She urges Mel they need the weapon before inviting her to come home where she truly belongs.

Back in the fissures, Viktor is lamenting the loss of the assistant. He throws her ashes into the river. He peers downwards, tempted to jump when Jayce appears, carrying his hammer.

They reminisce about hard times when they were still young inventors. Viktor tells him to destroy the Hexcore; he can’t do it himself. He asks Jayce to promise him, Jayce obliges. Viktor laments the failure of their technology. They have to make it right this time.

Allegiances

Sevika and the barons come into Silco’s office. Tensions rise as it seems power has shifted. Finn tells Silco he admires him, but the crime lord is out of his time. The crime lord talks of loyalty while Sevika arms herself behind him. She slashes the air, but her blade hits Finn.

Silco asks if Sevika was tempted. She says not in such a case but warns him it won’t be the last.

Silco finds a letter from Jayce. They meet at one of the seawalls. Silco hands him a letter of terms — he wants free trade routes, amnesty, access to Hexgates, and sovereignty. Jayce thinks it’s ridiculous. Silco appeals to Jayce’s fear of war. Jayce retorts the Undercity has no chance against them, and the council couldn’t care less. The councilor says he’s trying to save them after what he’s seen down there.

Silco insists it’s the price of peace. Jayce tells him his terms: discontinue Shimmer, give the Hextech crystal back, and give him Jinx — she has to pay for her crimes. Silco is faced with a tough choice.

Friends: Old and New

Ekko leads Heimerdinger to their settlement. The professor is impressed by their quick progress.

Silco sits down at Vander’s statue. He pours a drink; he’s about to gain what they had wanted all these years but giving away their daughter conflicts with him.

Vi enters the Last Drop and stares down its many patrons. Sevika throws everyone out and meets her one-on-one — a rematch ensues — Shimmer against Hextech; blue and purple light flash inside the bar.

Sevika gains the upper hand with her blade, beating Vi to the floor. Vi remembers Vander, who tells her Jinx still needs her; they all do. Vi wakes up and spits a tooth. She unhands a broken gauntlet and resumes the fight.

After a struggle, she breaks Sevika’s robot arm and slams her into the wall. Vi screams and punches the ground, calling for Silco. As she tries to recover, Jinx pistol-whips her from behind.

Proposal

Jayce meets with the councilors, reporting his findings with the raid. He proposes they are unfit to rule the Undercity; they’re right not to trust the topside. The council warns him of his rash actions, but he doesn’t care anymore. He shares a final proposal: peace with Silco in exchange for the Undercity’s independence.

The council is enraged.

Vi wakes up, tied in a dark room. Jinx tells her it wasn’t Silco who made her — it was Vi. Vi apologizes, saying she never wanted to leave her.

Jinx reveals memories of Vi never left her head. Vi tells her about her time in prison and insists that getting back to her sister was the only thing she wanted.

Jinx asks if they’re still sisters. She lights up the place, revealing Silco at the other end of the table, tied up and gagged. They’re back at the warehouse where Vander died.

Revelations

Vi is shocked to see the others at the dining table — makeshift mannequins of their old friends. Jinx tells her she met with Caitlyn earlier as she brings out a covered dish.

The dish is a cupcake with the Hex crystal on top. She brings Caitlyn to the table, all tied up and gagged as well.

Vi tells her sister to leave Caitlyn out of this. There are two empty chairs: one for Jinx and one for Powder. Jinx asks Vi where she should sit. She hands Vi a pistol to send Jinx away and kill her.

Vi refuses, so Jinx takes the pistol and points it to Caitlyn. Vi tells her they’ll move away as sisters, and she’ll never see Silco again.

Silco’s gag is removed. He insists Powder is Jinx; Vi has turned her back on her, and he won’t give up Jinx no matter what topside offered.

Caitlyn frees herself using a broken glass. She takes Jinx’s weapon and threatens her.

Explosion

Vi tells her to stop. Caitlyn tells her Powder is too far gone. Jinx drops the gun, but she smirks, and with Shimmer speed, she disarms Caitlyn and smacks her. Silco tells her to finish Caitlyn, while Vi asks Powder to remember who she is, then mentions Mylo, Claggor, and Vander.

Silco points the gun at Vi, but Jinx shoots in rage, hitting Silco. Jinx apologizes to him. In his last breath, Silco tells her he would never have given her up for anything. In the end, she sits on the chair named Jinx, telling her sister they’ve both changed.

Jinx takes up her weapon. She installs the Hexcore crystal to her gun, takes it outside, and points it to the tallest building.

The council votes in favor of Jayce’s proposal, but Jinx’s bomb smashes through the council window.

Our Thoughts

I had no idea how the plot threads could be cleanly resolved in this finale. I guess that’s because they’re not supposed to! Anyway, a part of me feels bad that all the loose ends aren’t tied up, but I do feel that all of our characters had gone through significant changes that make sense. Jinx finally accepts herself, but the part of her from the past is something she can’t let go of. She’s changed due to the crime lord’s influence, but some of that is her choice. This episode also made me see Silco in a different light. Instead of being one-dimensional, we see him waver. We see him be like Vander. It’s an exceptional episode; I rate this a 4.8/5.
