Beastars Season 1 Episode 4 Recap - Give it Your All

Injury

The PR lead is angry at his team’s botched photos. None of the close-ups look good.

Rouis is at a nurse’s sickbed with all the members watching over him, worried.

The president assures him the audience didn’t notice him faint. The nurse discovers his leg is injured, and he can’t perform the next day. Despite the broken leg, they praise Rouis for his performance, but all he hears is everyone’s pity. He asks Bill the tiger to fill in for him.

They rehearse hard that night. As a result of Bill taking the Reaper role, Legoshi has to fill in for a minor role — one of the villains. It’s been four years since he’s joined the club, but it will be his first on-stage role.

Fill-ins

They rehearse a sword-fighting scene. Bill starts fiercely; Legoshi is evasive. But soon after, the tiger senses the wolf’s own strength. The rehearsal devolves into a real battle as Bill tries to excite him up for the next day. Bill expects an excellent performance tomorrow as they are both carnivores.

Legoshi heads home that night. She meets Els for a walk. Els encourages him to support Bill for tomorrow. She’s surprised to see him smile as they say goodnight. The wolf realizes he can also do his best to match Bill’s determination.

The next day, the audience is abuzz for another performance from Rouis. The deer heads into the dressing room to support Bill. Bill assures Rouis he won’t mess up. The house is full again today.

Bill asks if he dislikes Legoshi. Rouis says he’s annoyed by the wolf’s meekness — he thinks he is forcing himself to look weak. Bill says he’s glad he’s born a tiger.

Bad Blood

Bill meets Legoshi. The wolf smells something weird with him, he pries him, but the tiger runs away to the bathroom. The wolf is angry. Bill is hiding a vial of rabbit’s blood under his coat, acquired illegally for use “just in case.” Enraged, as Legoshi thinks of Hal, they have a scuffle, but the tiger gets the upper hand.

The defeated Legoshi promises not to back down.

Bill performs a fierce rendition of Adler, but he feels discomfort inside. He hears the murmurs of the audience, noticing their disappointment that he’s not Rouis.

When it’s time for Legoshi to enter, he runs straight into him and punches him squarely in the jaw. The audience gasps as the vial falls to the floor.

Legoshi is in full aggression mode. He punches Bill’s skull helm off his face. He keeps punching him, thinking of Hal. Bill stops him and matches his strength. Bill hugs him. He realizes the wolf has smelled rabbit’s blood before, thus his rage. The tiger drags his claws behind him, left as a ‘token of friendship.’

Hero

The wolf feels the warmth of his own blood. The blood that constantly tortures him. Bill asks him to give up already. Legoshi staggers to the ground. Bill takes the sword and declares himself the hero. He’s about to strike when Rouis comes in to disarm him.

The audience gasps as the deer dons the Reaper helmet — the audience hyped. Rouis whispers to Legoshi not to show his bloody back. It turns out he also knew of the rabbit’s blood.

Rouis intimidates the bruised tiger. Bill runs away. The deer continues to give an inspiring performance as he helps Legoshi stand. The crowd loves it. Legoshi marvels at the rousing applause, wondering what the audience thinks of them.

Our Thoughts

I love the tension of this episode: how Rouis could swoop in and be the hero. Legoshi seems to be coming out of his shell, both with potential good and bad outcomes. I also really love the music for this episode. I rate this a 4/5.
