Beastars Season 1 Episode 5 Recap - Two Sides to the Story

Rampage

The story of the drama club’s second performance spreads all over the school. The PR team sells a crazy amount of news, but the rumors get convoluted.

Legoshi shares lunch with his canine friend Jack at the empty pool. He advises the wolf to avoid crowds, as his “rampage” from the previous day has made school headlines. People call it: “Birth of A Dark Hero.”

Legoshi thinks Jack doesn’t know he wasn’t acting on stage. He insists Rouis should have all the praise.

After the play, Bill and Legoshi get a scolding from Rouis. He hands Bill the rabbit’s blood back. He’s concerned about them: went crazy onstage and spilled blood — they could have killed each other.

He threatens to suspend them for a while. The two plead, but a group of fans and reporters appear behind Rouis. They ask him about the performance.

Unforeseen Consequence

Rouis changes his mind, realizing the act made him more popular. He tells them the incident was all planned out. He brings forth Bill and Rouis and tells them they were depicting the various conflicts of this world. The deer plays it out as a great lesson in faith before leaving the two to share their insights.

Jack asks Legoshi if his anger has subsided; he knows Legoshi did not act on stage — Legoshi is surprised. He reveals he’s always been a loner and dealt with his emotions by himself, but that day, he lets out his anger.

Jack tells him it’s good to do that sometimes. Legoshi doesn’t like it, but Jack likes that he’s changed. He asks the wolf if something inspired him, something like love. Legoshi is stunned, concluding Jack’s hunch. The wolf storms off as Jack tries to guess who the girl is.

Festival

Meanwhile, Rouis and Hal are alone at the gardening club; the deer pulls her into bed.

The drama club is invited to the Festival of Meteor. They’re excited to get a tour of the city, but the art team complains about their work. They have to make a dinosaur model; the festival commemorates the extinction event.

Kibi says the festival is a ruse: people only attend it for the lighting ceremony, where couples gain blessing for their relationship.

Legoshi suddenly stops on their way to have coffee and asks permission to leave.

Flowers

Hal sees a wilted flower in the hallway and decides to water it herself when the bully trips her: Mizuchi has set up the bait.

Hal fights back; she knows Mizuchi hasn’t made up with her boyfriend yet. Mizuchi says she’s further endangering their species. Hal says her desperation makes her look weak, and they’ll soon be extinct.

Mizuchi and her friends suddenly become stunned, not by Hal,  but by a figure behind her, so they run away.

Legoshi is left speechless now that she’s met her. The wolf picks a flower up and asks if she’s okay. She invites him to dinner.

Words

At the cafeteria, Legoshi is still speechless. He thinks he changed, but apparently not by much. He can’t even ask her name.

Hal tells him to cheer up and eat. She initiates small talk, but Legoshi can only stare.

She casually thanks him for what he did the day before. She was ready to get in bed with him, but instead, he put a blanket on her. Legoshi puzzles out. He still doesn’t know her name, so he feels the distance between them grow.

Distance

It turns out every time Legoshi opens his mouth, a part of her wants to flee by instinct. She is barely holding it inside.

After dinner, Hal thanks her, and they walk back home. Outside, Hal kneels to fix her shoes. Legoshi lowers himself to help her. They see eye to eye; the distance disappears. He finally gets to ask her name. He wants to see her more.

Our Thoughts

The last episode showed a complex societal structure. Now we’re shown an equally complex romantic affair. Beastars is making good use of its world while exploring something exciting. I rate this 3.5/5.
