Beastars Season 1 Episode 7 Recap - Below the Fur Coat

The Hen

Legom, a hen, sits beside a droopy Legoshi in class. They’re not close, but she knows one of his secrets: he always eats egg sandwiches on Wednesdays, eggs she laid herself.

She sells her eggs in restaurants as a part-time job, something she’s proud of. Legom often stays up late and foregoes social activities to take care of her eggs. She sees it as a civic duty for all hen-kind, making her happy.

But one day, she sees Legoshi snacking on something else. The wolf says the egg sandwich tastes different these days. The hen faints as she hears it.

She’s devastated, but one of the store owners actually decided to sell her eggs on Fridays — many people like her eggs, so it’s sold on the busiest day — Legom cheers up. Still, Legoshi doesn’t know her eggs already sell on a different day.

Love and Sadness

Hal finds herself in a cold forest. She looks everywhere, but she can’t feel the warmth while making love with Rouis. He sees her sadness and remembers the first time they met.

It was spring during their tenth grade. Hal screamed after seeing Rouis’ bloody face. He had shed his antlers at an unexpected time, so he asked her to keep it a secret. Rouis was surprised she didn’t recognize him. He paid her to borrow the place and to hide there. She refused the payment but volunteered to heal him instead.

Their feelings developed during those days.

Chance Encounters

Hal says she’ll be selling flowers for the festival. Rouis offers her money, but she asks him to give her love instead. They hug for a moment, but Rouis reveals he and his fiancé have been arranged to continue the family line. He leaves, patting Hal on the head.

Rouis opens the blinds; he’s surprised to see Legos i. They ask each other what they’re doing there. The deer tells him Hal isn’t here, realizing the wolf doesn’t know her name. Rouis makes an excuse: he’s there to check on her for the festival.

Rouis asks Legoshi if he knows Hal, who is sweating profusely in the room, hiding.

Legoshi admits he just wants to see her. They both head back. Hal hears everything.

At the stairs, Legoshi smells Hal’s scent on him. He asks if Rouis and Hal are friends. Rouis admits they are. He asks Legoshi if he has a crush on someone; Legoshi is unsure, so the deer tells him to pay attention to Juno instead.

The Wolves

Legoshi sees he’s grown taller; he doesn’t like it. The events at the Black Market still haunt him — he feels he’s slipping away from Hal. He checks his nails. Juno suddenly appears beside him, also checking her nails.

They have a casual talk. Juno asks him if people fear wolves. She feels like everyone is avoiding her, and it bothers her that she was selected for a dinosaur role.

She asks Legoshi to watch her dance moves. Juno is smitten as he joins in to teach her. She swoons at him. She outright tells him she feels great when they’re together, but Legoshi merely says it’s because they’re the same species.

Love and Rabbits

Jack is worried: he finds a raunchy rabbit magazine from Legoshi’s things. He asks Legoshi about it but gets kicked by the panicking wolf. Jack promises not to tell anyone. Legoshi admits he has feelings for a rabbit, but he can’t process it. He can’t say if it’s love and tells Jack he’s just confused. That’s right. He’s used to repressing his feelings anyway.

While working with the art club, Hal appears behind Legoshi. She offers to help him for a bit, but he tells her he’s busy.

Later, he notices Rouis talking with Hal. Something primal awakens inside him — he realizes he loves her.

Our Thoughts

The episode is kind of average in an above-average anime, but it ends with a great cliffhanger. Has our lead finally gained his strength? I rate this 3.4/5.
