Beastars Season 1 Episode 8 Recap - Caught like Floss in a Canine's Teeth

Festival Preparations

People marvel at the giant dinosaur built by the art guys. Legoshi is sulking at the corner; his club mates wonder if he’s fought with Juno. The herbivores are asked to leave before dark due to previous devouring incidents.

Hal is working when the mayor asks her to leave early. She realizes everyone’s left her, making her feel sad — Legoshi appears.

The wolf crouches down and asks her if they can go home together. He tells her it’s dangerous but in a very menacing tone.

Hal is worried about his weird actions. They both miss the train due to some trouble at the ticketing booth.

Devoured

Concerned, Hal tells him she can’t understand what he’s thinking, just like the first time they met. He changes the subject, but Hal keeps on with it. Legoshi says he’s okay keeping it to himself before telling her not just to give herself to anyone.

Annoyed, Hal says she doesn’t want to hear it. He doesn’t know what it’s like to be her, who might be devoured before she experiences love. Hal tries to storm off, but Legoshi grabs her to talk. They reach an impasse, but the citizens see them; they’re concerned about what Legoshi is doing.

Hal grabs his arm, and they run.

Legoshi gets a boost of confidence and guides Hal away. They hide in a bathroom stall. Legoshi asks her if she feels in danger with him.

They find a park bench and talk. She tells him of a time when she was almost devoured; she shows him her scar. Hal says she’s not afraid when they’re together.

Legoshi thanks Hal as they walk home. She asks him to smile.

Rivals

During rehearsals, Bill wounds Rouis with his claws. Legoshi asks him about it, but the deer seems irritable.

Rouis lectures the whole team, saying they can’t make mistakes at the festival. Juno arrives late. She’s actually very popular now due to her efforts. She praises the art team for their work, but her eyes look at only Legoshi.

Rouis approaches Juno after hours while she’s cleaning. She asks him to watch her dance. Rouis moves in to join her, but Juno overpowers the deer. She’s figured him out: he hates carnivores. She declares war on Rouis, saying she’ll be the next Beastar.

Rouis compliments her — he’d rather be devoured by her than the others. They go back and forth, and he tells her she’ll never have Legoshi.

Juno asks him why. Rouis just tells her to watch.

In the Dark

Juno wonders about what Rouis said as she joins the others during the festival. She approaches Legoshi and thanks him for helping her, but the wolf seems nonchalant. Juno tells him about the blessing the lighting ceremony can give to a couple. She’s about to invite him when the power goes out.

The animals panic. Legoshi asks everyone to stick together. Nocturnals’ eyes are suited for the night, so they’ll guide them. The herbivores clump together as the carnivores protect them.

Legoshi remembers Hal. He asks to leave and runs for the gardening booth. The rabbit isn’t at her post. He tries tracking her scent — she’s behind one of the trees.

She hugs him but calls out Rouis’ name. When the lights return, she apologizes profusely. Legoshi kneels, saying it’s okay, and hands her a handkerchief to clean herself.

Juno sees the interaction. She can’t believe it.

Our Thoughts

Ahh, the typical anime love-web — only this time it’s much more complicated with species, conventions, and social stigmas. And here I thought this anime would be silly. I was dead wrong. I rate this a 4/5.
