'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Season 7, Episode 4 'The Jimmy Jab Games II' Review: Motivation

Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues with its station shenanigans. After dealing with one of their colleagues who lost his memory, the team has time to enjoy themselves in the station. New competitors join this year’s competition, not for the same reasons. In an eventful, body pain-inducing, chaotic sequence, the Jimmy Jab Games happens. Towards the end, there can only be one champion; and everyone seems okay with it.

On Thursday’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) hosts this year’s Jimmy Jab Games. To make the competition interesting, Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) agrees to wager his new car to Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker). Meanwhile, Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) learns Rosa Diaz’s (Stephanie Beatriz) motivation for winning the games. Also, Charles motivates Debbie Fogle (Vanessa Bayer) to reach for her dreams.

Responsible Adult

Now that Jake is becoming a father, he decides to make a couple of adult choices. For instance, he recently purchased a family sedan. People are starting to take note of his newfound responsibility, much like Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews). In fact, Jake ends up being in charge of the station as Terry heads out for an administrative seminar. Still, Jake wishes to keep his rebellious, irresponsible image, so he agrees to wager the new car to Hitchcock. Throughout the competition, Jake and Hitchcock go through ridiculous lengths to win. Hitchcock even resorts to medication to enhance his performance but it eventually backfires. Towards the end, adrenaline-addled Jake wins. Later, Amy helps him realize that he is not becoming a boring adult. To a degree, Jake is responsible; but he still is Jake.

Private Fuel

Initially, it looked like neither Holt nor Rosa needed the rewarded day-off provided you win the games. Holt, however, wished to earn it for his amusement. Particularly, he focused on eliminating Rosa whose motivations seemed unclear. As the first half began, Holt persists on attacking Rosa’s psyche. He knew that Rosa has an underlying reason for wanting the day-off. Eventually, he figures it out. Rosa broke up with her girlfriend, Jocelyn. With that, he apologizes for prying and leaves the competition to hang out with Rosa. Rosa and Holt’s similar personalities (and iconic ways of talking) makes them a perfect match as the station’s next new pair of best friends.

Put Your Mind to It

The squad’s newest member, Debbie, finds it hard to fit in. She tends to be the wallflower and prefers lame cop stuff than actual police work. When it comes to enjoyment, her preference remains the same. If it was not for Charles, she probably remained on the sidelines. Indeed, Debbie was the type to shy from the limelight. Despite this, Charles encourages her, even after her disqualification [turkey allergies]. Charles truly becomes the Greatest Showman to Debbie’s Bearded Lady. However, His encouragement went a notch too far as Debbie steals some cocaine and weapons from evidence lockup as the episode ended. It seems unlikely for her to be that type of cop but there she was. ‘Anything I put my mind to,’ she sings happily.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7, Episode 4 ‘The Jimmy Jab Games II’ Final Verdict

At this point, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is done with the adjusting and has started with the usual craziness. Also, it tackles important aspects of each character, namely the Peraltas and Holt and Rosa. Charles mainly guides the plot while others serve as the atmosphere builders. Holt and Rosa’s friendship is one of the show’s paradoxes as these two usually show no emotion. Jake and Amy, on the other hand, become more of a husband and wife type of couple. The squad has come a long way from their crazy beginnings, and are bound to face more together.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues Thursday, February 27th with ‘Debbie’ at 8/7c on NBC.
