'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Season 7, Episode 7 'Ding Dong' Review: Farewell

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has a unique way of delivering messages to the audience. After one of their own takes positivity too far and our favorite Cop Couple’s attempts on having a baby, the show takes a different turn. Of course, the episode has its trademark precinct mayhem. Alongside this is an interesting take on death. Specifically, the death of a long time nemesis.

On Thursday’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Officer Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) deals with the unexpected death of Chief Madeline Wuntch (Kyra Sedgwick). At the station, Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) watches as Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) and Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) compete for his VIP movie tickets. To Jake’s surprise, Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) brings him some good news.

Holt’s hate for Wuntch is unparalleled. The man literally celebrated her death by handing out bagels to every cop in the station. Also, when he faces Wuntch’s final plan against him, he has a ridiculous amount of countermeasures. Since he was in charge of her memorial, he initially set it up like a party. It took him, Amy, and Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) two hours to redecorate. Also, Holt meets Adam Jarver (Michael McDonald), who claims to be Wuntch’s true nemesis but eventually reveals that he is Wuntch’s nephew. Still, Holt is not caught off guard as the current memorial was a decoy. At the time of the actual memorial, Amy and Rosa help Holt realize that this indeed was the last time he hears from Wuntch. Despite their mutual hate for each other, Holt can truly say that Wuntch challenged him to become a better police officer.

While Holt, Amy, and Rosa were out learning a life lesson, Jake, Charles, and Terry did the same; albeit in a ridiculous way. Jake made the mistake of not considering his friends’ roles as fathers when he shows them his VIP movie tickets to the Kwazy Cupcakes movie. Since Charles’ son, Nikolaj (Antonio Raul Corbo) and Terry’s Twin daughters,  Cagney (Dani Lockett) and Lacey (Dannah Lockett) both love Kwazy Cupcakes, their dads go to ridiculous lengths to win Jake’s tickets. Surprisingly, Jake tried his best to settle the feud as mature adults but the dads did not budge, going as far as having a boxing match. Eventually, Jake decides that he had enough of their silly contest so he is taking the kids with him. However, what Jake did not realize is that he offered to babysit the kids for free.

Throughout the episode, Jake and Amy had no interactions. While this is not a rare occurrence, it felt quite different in this one. In the previous chapters, Jake and Amy tried and tried hard to conceive but failed. The couple reached a point of exhaustion especially with all the methods they tried to do. Amy even admits that she is done trying. When the couple finally has screen time, the best of things happen for them. Her strange, emotional behavior turns out to be a side effect of her pregnancy, not her medication. Finally, the Nine-Nine’s hottest couple is on their way to start their own family.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 7 Episode 7 ‘Ding Dong’ Final Verdict

Brooklyn Nine-Nine perfectly delivers the concept of respect in competition. Although Wuntch literally died before Holt could say that he will miss her, the point made its way across as Holt realizes how she helped him grow. Jake’s maturity in dealing with Charles and Terry sets up his new role as a dad. Throughout the season, Jake struggled with reconciling his fun, carefree personality with the maturity and responsibility fatherhood requires. As the season nears its end, one can see how the Nine-Nine is on its way to having a happy ending, but they surely will face something grand in the end.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues Thursday, March 19th with ‘The Takeback’ at 8/7c on NBC.
