'Child's Play' SyFy TV Series Reveals 'Chucky' as Working Title, Will Return to Original Movie's Tone

Chucky is coming to the small screen. SyFy announced last month that it’s developing a TV series based on the 1988 horror flick, Child’s Play, one that creator Don Mancini has been teasing for quite some time. Now, during the TCA 2019 Press Tour, developments about the horror series have been revealed.

Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca made the announcement in an interview with SlashFilm. Antosca will be working with Mancini for the show, which is tentatively titled Chucky. Since it’s only a working title, things might still change, but it does make sense for the show to call itself that since all the other films that followed the Child’s Play narrative focused on Chucky (take SeedBride, and Curse of Chucky for example).

Of course, the last Chucky movies hardly made a mark as notable as the first three Child’s Play movies did, and so Antosca confirmed that the show would indeed echo the tone of the original films from the late ’80s and early ’90s. “The series is going to be closer to the tone of the first two movies in the series though,” Antosca said. “It’s going to go back to a sort of classic scare.”

To make the show’s horrors more authentic, Chucky will bring back Brad Dourif to lend his terrifying doll voice. The series will also follow the continuity of the previous Chucky movies after Child’s Play, with Jennifer Tilly possibly reprising her role as the evil doll’s love interest, Tiffany, from Bride of Chucky, and Fiona Dourif returning as Nina from Curse and Cult of Chucky.

“They might pop in eventually, but it’s new characters,” Antosca said. “I don’t want to say anything definitive. I want to leave that to Don, but let’s just say that there might be opportunities in the story for Jennifer or Fiona to make an appearance. Of course, the plan is for Brad to be the voice.”

This year also marks the movie remake of the Child’s Play series, with Aubrey Plaza and Gabriel Bateman starring as Karen and Andy Barclay. The film is set to hit theaters June 21st.
