Green Lantern & Adam Strange HBO Max Series Officially A Go

The Greg Berlanti-led slate of DC shows continues to expand from The CW to HBO Max. In a slew of overwhelming announcements today, the streaming platform is setting its sights on adding two new DC shows to its impressive roster of TV shows—Green Lantern and Adam Strange.

The two new DC shows were announced during the HBO Max WarnerMedia Day presentation, with Greg Berlanti taking the helm. Details about the Green Lantern series weren’t revealed, save for the fact that fans have been clamoring for him to return to the big or small screen. The character is a key member of the Justice League and one of the most enduring superheroes in the DC fore. Several characters have donned the Green Lantern mantle in the comics—Alan Scott (who actually got his powers from a meteor and not from the Guardians at planet OA), Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz. Each Lantern is tasked with a certain sector for them to oversee and protect from all kinds of threats.

Rumors of a new Green Lantern movie and TV series began circulating as early as 2014 when Ryan Reynolds’ infamous take on the Emerald Knight was met negatively by fans and critics.

Adam Strange’s show, on the other hand, is described as a superhero anthology series that will follow different human and superhero characters with a tinge of Twilight Zone’s influence and vibe. Titled Strange Adventures, the show will feature one-hour episodes focusing on “characters from across the DC canon” and “explore close-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and superhumans.”

Strange, on the other hand, is the cosmic hero of the alien planet Rann who first appeared in comic book pages in 1958. He used to be an archaeologist back on Earth but had to take up superhero duties in Rann, fighting off monsters and alien threats with his super suit, jet pack, and a powerful ray gun. Strange was heavily featured in the ’50s iteration of the Strange Adventures comic book series, which is the direct inspiration for the HBO Max show. The Strange Adventures comic featured a number of B-movie-esque stories, with titles such as “Challenge of the Gorilla Genius,” The Man with the Comet Head,” and “The Skyscraper That Came to Life.”

Shaun Sipos portrayed Adam Strange in Krypton, the recently-canceled Superman prequel series on SyFy. It’s unknown if Sipos will return to the role for Strange Adventures.

The Green Lantern show and Strange Adventures marks Berlanti’s latest project on the network, joining the Arrowverse in the producer-director’s extensive roster of DC shows (though it’s not confirmed if both shows will join the Arrowverse continuity). “Both of these original DC properties we’ll be creating for HBO Max will be unlike anything seen on television,” Berlanti said of the new projects (via Deadline). “An anthology series of cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist, and, in what promises to be our biggest DC show ever made, we will be going to space with a Green Lantern television series, but I can’t reveal any more about that just yet.”

There is no set release date for the two shows as of yet, but we do know that HBO Max will launch in Spring 2020.
