'American Crime Story' Season 3 Will Dive Deep Into the Clinton Impeachment

FX’s American Crime Story continues to tackle the biggest scandals of the ’90s. The third season of the crime anthology show from Ryan Murphy will have the 1998 Clinton-Lewinsky scandal unfold, leading up to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.

According to Variety, the third season of American Crime Story will be called Impeachment: American Crime Story. The show will star Beanie Feldstein (BooksmartLady Bird) as former White House intern Monica Lewinsky, Sarah Paulson as Lewinsky’s close friend Linda Tripp, and Annaleigh Ashford as Paula Jones. Other cast members, especially those who will be playing the Clintons, are yet to be announced. Impeachment: American Crime Story will draw inspiration from Jeffrey Toobin’s book, “A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President.”

The Clinton-Lewinsky scandal shook the country in 1998, prompting Congress to launch an impeachment investigation into President Clinton. Four years prior to the scandal, Jones put out a sexual harassment lawsuit against Clinton. “This franchise re-examines some of the most complicated, polarizing stories in recent history in a way that is relevant, nuanced and entertaining,” FX Networks and FX Productions chai John Landgraf said in a statement. “Impeachment: American Crime Story will likewise explore the overlooked dimensions of the women who found themselves caught up in the scandal and political war that cast a long shadow over the Clinton Presidency.”

The first season of American Crime Story followed the trial of former football superstar O.J. Simpson in The People vs. O.J. Simpson. Paulson then won an Emmy for her role in the season as prosecutor Marcia Clark. Season 2 followed the killing of fashion designer Gianni Versace and the near-capture of his killer Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace.

Sarah Burgess has been tapped to write Impeachment, based on Toobin’s book. Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall, and Paulson are executive producing. Lewinsky will also produce the third season alongside Henrietta Conrad and Jemima Khan.

Impeachment: American Crime Story is eyeing a February 2020 production start, and will premiere on September 27, 2020.
