Inventing Anna Season 1 Episode 7 Recap - Cash on Delivery

Vivian rants to her coworkers about not being able to find Rachel. They tell her that she should just write without Rachel because she has enough to go on without her. Paul comes to Scriberia and asks Vivian about an update on the article. Vivian tells him that she’s in the middle of her process, so there is no draft yet. Paul reminds her that she has a baby coming so that’s the deadline. Vivian tells him that she’s due in 3 weeks but she’ll take care of the article in time. Lou tells Vivian to just start writing and that they will find her Rachel.

Vivian puts on her headphones and starts writing. She was in the middle of it when Maud asks her to come with her. Maud brings her to the copy room where no one can hear them and informs her that she knows why Rachel isn’t talking to Vivian. She reveals that Rachel has sold her story to Vanity Fair. This enrages Vivian, and she swears.

Flashback: Rachel arrives at her NY apartment after the trip to Morocco. She calls Anna and asks her to wire the money.

Vivian’s coworkers connive and agree that no one should tell Paul or Landon about the upcoming Vanity Fair piece.

Flashback: Rachel goes back to work and her coworkers rave about her Insta pictures in Morocco. She sees Noah and tells him that her card got charged the full amount. She says that Anna will fix it though. She texts Anna about the money and Anna tells her that the wire is arriving the next day.

Vivian and her coworkers wait out for Vanity Fair’s article to go live. When it finally gets published, they see that it is a first-hand account of Rachel – she wrote it herself, which gives Vivian a significant advantage. They say this is good for them but they all go quiet when Paul screams from his office, “Kent! We got scooped by Vanity Fair?”

Flashback: Rachel is unable to focus on anything at her work because she is preoccupied with her credit card charges. She texts Anna a couple of times but all she says is that the wire has been sent. She finally calls Anna after three months to tell her that she needs the money because she has spent hers on minimum payments already.

Vivian explains to Landon that what Vanity Fair has is not journalism at all because it is just Rachel complaining about her friend, no facts, no interviews. Vivian defends her piece by saying that Rachel has no clue about the scale of what Anna did, the swindle, and the banks involved. Paul tells her that he should cut their losses and stop writing the article, but Landon tells Vivian to keep writing.

Flashback: Rachel invites Noah to her apartment and they drink together. Rachel tells him that she is still waiting for Anna to pay her back. Noah tells her that she has to look out for herself because Anna is not her friend, or she wouldn’t put her through the experience in Morocco. Rachel tells him that everything is going to be fine because Anna is just different but she’s good for the money. The next day at work, she gets an email from Paypal saying that she received a payment from Anna. She excitedly logs into her account only to find out that she only paid her $5,000. She was about to call Anna again when Linda approaches Rachel and tells her that she sent an email the previous week about AmEx, something about an unpaid balance on her card. She reminds Rachel that Marco is doing quarterly checks in the week to come, so she needs to pay whatever needs to be paid. Rachel tells her she will. Rachel panics and calls Anna saying that someone at work knows.

Back to the present, Vivian’s coworkers tell her that after coming home from Morocco, Anna cheks into the Beekman, into the W, and then she becomes homeless. Vivian tells them that she thought of something and that she needs to leave. While walking out, she makes a call for her doctor to meet her in the hospital.

Flashback: Rachel cries while in a cubicle in the washroom. She gets out only to find out that Linda has heard her cry. Linda asks her if there is anything she wanted to tell her. Rachel tells her the truth. Linda tells her that she should tell Marco before he finds out because what happened is fraud and it might mean jail time. Rachel tells her that she is not letting her friend go to jail because she is a good person.

Jake rushes into the hospital and meets Vivian. The doctor says that in three days tops, she will be in labor. She recommends gentle walks, low stress, and relaxation.

Flashback: Rachel calls Anna and she actually picks up. She tells her that she will get her a manager’s check and that she should pick it up at the W.

Vivian tells Jack that her story isn’t done yet, because she needs to talk to Kacy. She says she needs to get the story out of her head and that she needs to have the baby knowing that she won.

Flashback: Rachel gets into the W and knocks into Anna’s room. The concierge sees her and tells her that Anna is no longer with them.

Vivian’s coworkers deduce that the W has called the cops and had Anna arrested for non-payment, which is when she met Todd.

Flashback: Todd gets her out on bail, and she says that her cards are still not working, so she tells Todd that she needs to stay with him. “Absolutely not”, Todd declares.

Vivian calls Todd and asks him how the article has affected his case. Todd tells her that he didn’t even know half of the stuff Rachel has published and it makes Anna looks so bad. He says he read that there was an intervention that they knew nothing about. Vivian goes straight to Kacy to ask about the intervention, and Kacy tells the story.

Flashback: Kacy was training a client, Nicole, when Rachel shows up in her studio in tears. She decides that they should have an intervention to confront Anna and to help Rachel. She tells Anna to meet her for drinks and that Nicole was in the neighborhood to pick her up. She agrees. Nicole comes with Anna to the restaurant. Anna sees Rachel and she immediately knew that she walked into an intervention. After a few drinks, Rachel sobs while asking Anna to pay her back the rest of the money. Anna calls her dramatic and Kacy butts in to say that Anna has left Rachel in a bad situation because she is about to lose her apartment and her job over the money that she owes her. Kacy asks Anna to tell them the truth about her trust fund. Anna tells them that what they’re doing is short-sighted and basic. She says that she has a lot on her mind and that she is leasing a whole building in Park Avenue so they shouldn’t be bothering her with credit card bills. She fires Kacy when she agrees when Nicole tells Anna that she is lying about 281 Park. Kacy shows her an article on her phone that says another company has secured a lease for the building Anna is claiming to be hers. Anna looks at it and says that it’s fake news. She screams and throws Kacy’s phone at her. They beg Anna to tell them the truth so they can help her, but Anna tells Rachel that she shouldn’t be treating her like that after everything she has done for her. Anna excuses herself and says that she needs to go to the restroom, so she leaves. However, she does not go there but instead, runs for the door and into a cab.

Kacy tells Vivian that she told Rachel that they should talk to Anna’s parents. She says that Rachel said she’ll think about it, so she was surprised when she sees that Rachel has published an article about Anna. Kacy tells Vivian that she wants to be out of the story because she doesn’t want her clients to see her in a negative light. Vivian goes back to the office to write her article. Maud interrupts her to tell that Ron wants out of her article too. Neff barges into the office and asks Vivian if Anna has seen Rachel’s article.

In prison, a guard hands over a copy of the magazine with Rachel’s article to Anna. She gets upset and screams that she needs to call Vivian.

Flashback: Rachel goes to the police to report what Anna did but the police tell her that they see no crime. Rachel explains what happened to her and Anna before Marco and Linda. She gets accused of helping her friend defraud the company.

Anna roams around the streets in tears, unable to eat because she has no money. She tries to call Alan and Gabriel, but they both don’t answer. Anna tries to get into another hotel, but she gets kicked out before she can even get to the desk attendant. She’s informed that they have a photo of her and that they have been warned against her. She is told that if she gets any closer to the desk, they will call security. Anna rides the metro and eats food that was left by another passenger.

Back to the present, Vivian writes the article and is on it for 12 hours already.

Flashback: The legal team at Vanity Fair steps in and tells Rachel that pending investigation, Rachel should surrender her company IDs and credit cards because she is suspended. Rachel fights back and tells them that she is entitled to a lawyer in compliance with the National Labor Relations Act and that she can have an independent representative present in the meeting, so they cannot do that to her. Anna sits at a cafe and looks at her bank apps and sees that she is on the negative for all of them. Todd calls her and asks her to be in court for her arraignment.

Vivian finishes her article and even Paul agrees when she tells him that it is good. However, he reminds her that they still need to have Kacy. She tells Paul that she’ll call Kacy just as her water breaks. She still calls her and gets her approval to use her quotes without mentioning her name.

Flashback: The court waits for Anna, but she does not show up. The judge issues a bench warrant for Anna. Anna goes to her bank and deposits a check, and then travels to another branch and encashes a check. This way, she was able to get cash.

Vivian goes into labor and gives birth to a healthy baby girl.

Flashback: Rachel goes into the DA’s office and files charges. Anna gets a flight to LA.

Vivian’s article gets published.

Our Thoughts

Call me a bad person, but I cannot hide my satisfaction of seeing Anna eat leftover food and get thrown out of a hotel. Finally, NY sees her for what she really is – a fraud. Hopefully, she won’t be able to scam any more people along the way. Poor Rachel, she stands to lose her job if things don’t get settled with AmEx. Again, she benefitted from the trip, so she isn’t exactly the victim she claimed to be, but hey, she does not deserve to lose everything she ever had because of that. I’m in Team Rachel here.

At long last, Vivian’s article gets published in this episode! We cannot wait to see if it will be picked up just like Vivian expected it to be. WE do hope she gets the redemption she wants, after all, she worked really hard for this.
