Lucifer Season 5 Episode 9 Recap - Family Dinner

[00:00:50] God addresses his sons to stop fighting and get along. Michael tries to get his father behind him and tells him that Amenadiel and Lucifer are teaming up on him. Lucifer knows he will get the blame, so he just wants things to be over with. Amenadiel takes the blame and apologizes because he can’t control the situation as the eldest. God doesn’t care who’s to blame. All he wants is for his sons to get along because they’re a family, and they must set an example. Michael does as told and goes to Amenadiel to hug and make up. Amenadiel gives him a pat on the back. Lucifer refuses Michael’s attempt to hug him. He is angry that God didn’t punish Michael for what he did. Lucifer leaves the precinct instead of arguing further.

[00:02:00] Maze hides behind one of the desks and signals Michael if it’s her time to strike. Michael tells Maze it isn’t the time, so she continues to hide. God approaches his grandson to cuddle him. God restores time, so everything goes back to normal. Linda asks God who he is. God just looks at her and smiles. Chloe realizes Lucifer had left her, so she looks for him, but he’s nowhere to be found. Chloe visits Lux where Lucifer is partying with his customers. She wants to talk with Lucifer, but she takes Lucifer’s words the wrong way. Lucifer tells Chloe he left because he got tired of people trying to tell him what to do. Chloe thinks he’s referring to her, so she just gives him some space and leaves.

[00:06:00] Lucifer explains things, but Chloe already walked away. He just resumes drinking his woes away. Meanwhile, Linda still can’t believe God is in her home. She keeps poking his biceps to see if God is real. She can’t grasp being in the presence of God, so she decides to get him a drink. Amenadiel tells his father about Michael and his schemes, but God doesn’t think it’s important. He wants to focus solely on Charlie and being a family. God has a great idea on how to unite his family. Chloe and Dan talk to each other as they head over to another case. Chloe wants Dan to take time off to process what he just learned about Lucifer. Dan tells Chloe she got kidnapped, so she needs the time off more than he did. They agree they just need to work.

[00:08:30] Dan thought Ella took the time off, but she didn’t. He greets Ella who says she didn’t need to go home. Ella wants to just work as well. No one argues with her, so she just briefs them on the latest case. The murder victim is Chris Peterson. He was burned alive at a miniature golf course owned by their family. They don’t have a suspect at the time, but Ella knows how to solve the case. She tells them they only need to introduce her to the family, and if she falls in love with one of them, then that’s their killer. Chloe tries to talk Ella out of it, but she’s convinced she will never find the love of her life. Lucifer prepares himself as he looks at Chloe from a distance. God appears behind him and invites him for family dinner.

[00:11:00] Lucifer refuses God’s offer for a family dinner. God tries to persuade Lucifer and even calls him son, but he still doesn’t accept. Lucifer goes to Chloe and greets her. Lucifer wants to talk with the victim’s family even if he doesn’t know about the case. Chloe realizes Lucifer is dealing with family issues, so she isn’t the issue. Chloe rushes to Lucifer to talk about things. Dan realizes he shouldn’t have come to work. Chloe and Lucifer ask Chris’ family. They tell them everyone has a role in maintaining the family business, but Chris didn’t accept his role. He left the business a few years back to work for himself. Lucifer could relate to Chris as the wayward son. The family tells them they didn’t kill Chris, but he died protecting the family business.

[00:13:00] The family blames Juan Perez for Chris’ death. Juan owns Hole in Juan, a rival miniature golf course. They used to play pranks on Juan until things escalated recently as Juan spray painted their course castle. Juan painted that he will destroy their golf course. Chloe wants to know how they knew it was Juan. They point out that Juan signed the vandal himself. Chloe and Lucifer go to Juan to question him. They arrive at Hole in Juan. Chloe calls out Juan, so he runs. Juan tries to escape in one of his carts, but Lucifer lifts the rear end and shuts the engine off. Chloe wants to ask Juan about the death of Chris. He’s surprised Chris is dead, but he tells Chloe he wouldn’t kill Chris.

[00:15:00] Juan ran because he’s using ZX3 on his carts. He thinks they would arrest him for it. Juan tells Chloe that Chris had come to him to apply for a job. Chloe wonders why Chris would approach Juan for a job when they already owned their own golf course. Lucifer tells Chloe that one of Chris’ siblings killed him. Chloe speaks with Chris’ girlfriend who confirms Lucifer’s theory. She tells them Chris left their family business because he can’t stand his own family. The girlfriend sides with Chris that it made sense he would apply for a job on the rival golf course to piss off his own family. Chloe finally gives in and tells Lucifer that one of the siblings may have killed Chris.

[00:18:00] Maze goes to God to ask for a soul. She wants a soul to connect with people and experience love. God tells Maze he can’t help her because she’s already perfect. Maze takes offense and thinks God doesn’t want to help her. She shows him her demon face and asks if it looks perfect for him. Maze tells God he made a mistake when he created demons and leaves. At the precinct, Lucifer is playing miniature golf when Amenadiel arrives. He tries to persuade Lucifer to attend their family dinner. Lucifer argues with Amenadiel; he doesn’t want to go. Amenadiel doesn’t want to argue any further, so he leaves. Dan speaks to Ella and assures her the world needs more of her than ever before.

[00:24:00] Chloe shares her theory with Lucifer. She uses him and Michael as examples to discover who killed Chris and understand what Lucifer is going through. They interview Chris’ siblings. Larry, Ted, and April turn against one another at the thought that someone was ratting them out. They all hate each other and blame one another for killing Chris. After the interview, Peter Petersen arrives and confesses to murdering his own son. Peter tells Chloe what happened. She wants the police officer to take his statement and detains him. After Peter’s confession, Lucifer realizes he wants his father to apologize to him and confess his faults. Lucifer decides to attend family dinner after all.

[00:29:00] Amenadiel and Michael help Linda set up dinner. Michael tells God not to expect Lucifer to arrive since he isn’t mature enough. Lucifer arrives at the last minute and brings soufflé. He pulls his chair to the far end of the table and sits across God. Linda places two bottles of wine on the table and proceeds to leave. God tells Linda she’s the mother of his grandson, so she’s considered family. Linda doesn’t have any choice as she sits beside Amenadiel. Michael is about to start eating when Lucifer interrupts him. Lucifer tells Michael they should say grace first. Linda volunteers to say grace and thanks God for the food, the company, as well as napkins, and oceans. Linda knows she just said the worst grace in history, but Amenadiel tells her otherwise. God tells Linda her prayer is beautiful as everyone starts to eat.

[00:33:00] Linda takes the first bite, and it took her breath away. God is pleased she likes his cooking. Lucifer doesn’t allow God to take one bite as he starts with Michael, his plot to ruin his life, and how he succeeded in making them fight so God would interfere. He also takes a swing with God because of what Amenadiel went through over the years because he was a total ass hat of a father to them. Finally, Lucifer ends his whining by asking God why hell suddenly no longer needs a warden when he spent millennia guarding the damn place. Michael tells Lucifer he got his own kingdom, but he’s still whining. Michael’s words don’t go well with Lucifer. He tells Michael he had it easy while he was stuck in hell.

[00:36:00] Michael doesn’t appreciate being Lucifer’s twin. He has his own share of problems since he can’t live up to Lucifer. God has enough of Lucifer and Michael. He interferes by flexing his power. The lights go out as thunder and lightning roar outside. The power returns as God calms down. Lucifer and Michael sit back down at the table. Linda still can’t believe what is happening. God just wants a nice family dinner, but it’s too much to ask. Linda laughs as she tries to break the ice. She realizes God’s favorite food is chicken, so everything tastes like chicken. She quickly apologizes for her statement and tells them she’s just uncomfortable being there. Amenadiel apologizes to Linda for seeing their family’s problem.

[00:38:00] Linda tells God his boys only longs for his love and affection which is common among most human families. Lucifer tells Linda he doesn’t want God’s love. All he came for was his confession that he is a bad father to them. Lucifer realizes God is a bad father because he doesn’t love them. Linda tells Lucifer he’s misinterpreting her reading again. Amenadiel tells Lucifer that he’s being unfair. Lucifer tells Amenadiel if he would treat Charlie like how God treated them. Amenadiel apologizes to God and hopes he won’t become like him. Lucifer tells God that if all the apples are bad, the tree is the problem. God apologizes to Lucifer for feeling so bad. He just wanted to empower all of them to make their own decisions. Lucifer gets to the bottom line and asks God if he loved them.

[00:40:30] God says that he really failed them if Lucifer needs to ask that question. Lucifer takes his answer as a no. Amenadiel tells Lucifer that God didn’t say no, but it didn’t matter. Lucifer just wants God to answer the question with a yes or no. Lucifer realizes God is not capable of love. He throws his necktie on the table and leaves. Everyone else just stays silent as Linda asks them if they want more wine. Lucifer goes to the precinct the next day to get an update on the case. He sees Chloe watching surveillance footage from Hole in Juan. Lucifer thought the case was over because Peter confessed, but his confession doesn’t add to how Chris died. They see Chris’ girlfriend, Betty, on the security footage, and she seems to be following Chris around.

[00:42:00] Betty tells them she didn’t know Chris was applying for a job at Hole in Juan, but the footage shows otherwise. The fuel used to try and burn down the miniature golf course had traces of ZX3, meaning it came from Hole in Juan. Chloe wants to bring Betty again for questioning. Dan tells them Peter is resisting house arrest and is trying to flee. They don’t understand why because Peter seems to be innocent. Lucifer and Chloe go after Peter to find out what he’s hiding. Meanwhile, Amenadiel helps God clean the dishes. Amenadiel asks God about Charlie and his mortality. God confirms Charlie will experience everything about being mortal, including sickness and death. Amenadiel begs God to switch places with his son. He wants to become mortal to spare Charlie. God tells Amenadiel that fatherhood is not that easy.

[00:45:00] Michael arrives to accompany God back to heaven. God tells Michael he will stay on Earth for a while. Michael wants to stay and accompany him, but God refuses. He tells Michael to return to heaven and banishes him from Earth. Chloe and Lucifer arrive at Union Station and see Peter running inside. They follow him through the crowd. Suddenly, people are running away, screaming. Peter takes out a gun and points it at Betty. He tells Chloe that Betty killed Chris. He confessed to killing Chris because he thought one of his children killed him. Peter posts bail and talks to his children. He realizes none of them killed Chris. Peter talks to Betty and finds out she’s skipping town. He realizes Betty killed Chris.

[00:47:00] Betty explains everything was an accident. She just wanted to burn the family business because it caused Chris so much pain and suffering. Chris saw what she was doing, and they struggled. Chris hits his head on the concrete and passed out. Betty couldn’t do anything to save Chris because the fire she started had spread so fast. She apologizes to Peter for accidentally killing Chris. Chloe arrests Betty as Lucifer takes the gun from Peter. He realizes the case has some similarities to his own problems. Back at Lux, Michael has a drink before he leaves Earth. Maze finds him by the bar and demands he fulfills his end of their deal. Michael clarifies he didn’t promise Maze a soul. He only promised her an audience with God who could give her a soul. Maze tells Michael things didn’t go according to plan.

[00:49:00] Michael apologizes that Maze didn’t get what she wanted. Maze apologizes as well that Michael didn’t get his either. Michael tells Maze everything isn’t over till it’s over. Michael still has some tricks up his sleeve as he returns to heaven, leaving Maze to drink by herself. Chloe speaks with Lucifer to apologize. She used the case to rush Lucifer, but he tells Chloe she helps him with so much. Lucifer knows Chloe deserves to know if Lucifer really loves her, but he can’t say it. Lucifer thinks that since God is incapable of love, then so is he. He tells Chloe he will never be able to tell her that he loves her.
