'A Million Little Things' Season 2, Episode 15 'The Lunch' Review: Dates And Meetings

Knew it! This week’s episode of A Million Little Things was far too light and optimistic to end just like that. Eve’s ex had been just a name in the past few weeks. And everyone knew he was going to appear sooner or later. But, his arrival still hit like a truck especially with the way director Richard J. Lewis put it. With Regina (Christina Moses_ and Rome (Romany Malco) really invested in Eve and the baby, things are really about to get messy there.

On the other hand, Someday is really becoming the place to be when it comes to important meetings and dates. The place has seen A Million Little Things’ friend group patch up, break up, and bond so many times I’ve lost count. This episode is no different. Maggie (Allison Miller) is on her first date. Rome is meeting Isaac Martin (B.J. Britt). And Delilah (Stephanie Szostak) is looking to talk to Sophie (Lizzy Greene) about drugs and sex. Without further ado, here are the highlights of this week’s episode on This Is Us.

Let’s Talk About Sex

Delilah finally finds the courage to confront Sophie about the joints in her sleeping bag. But, just as she’s about to finally get it over it, Sophie blurts out that she’s been using birth control pills. I definitely did not see that coming. But, with the Jake situation, I get why Delilah’s brain suddenly hardwires with that info. Stunned, Delilah just leaves the conversation for later that night.

Given her new worry, Delilah goes full mommy mode. She tries to send Jake and Sophie as far away from each other as possible at work. But, in the middle of the day, Jake ducks out calling in sick. And Sophie suddenly asks to switch shifts. Delilah immediately figures out what’s going on. So, she heads straight to Jake’s apartment and finds Sophie there. Despite her worries though, Sophie was simply taking care of a very sick Jake who seems to have appendicitis.

After taking Jake to the hospital, the mother and daughter finally really talk things out. Delilah explains that she did love Eddie. But now, she realized that they were simply both so lost at the time and leaned on each other too far. And it still fills her with so much regret. Sophie, on the other hand, admits that she started taking the pills with her mom as the cautionary tale. She also reveals that Jake told her he loved her and Sophie does too. With everything they’ve poured out, the two breathe out a sigh of relief.

After that, Delilah brings up the topic of the joints. But, it seems that whatever it was about doesn’t bother them much. Later on, we see Sophie tending to Jake with Delilah watching over them with a smile on her face.

Tough Lessons From Eddie

On the other side of town, Eddie’s helping Dakota (Anna Akana) record her album. Unfortunately, after hearing a track, Trevor (Peter Benson), one of the label producers, has some notes for it. Dakota doesn’t take it kindly. And when Eddie tries to convince her that it’s just a natural part of the process, Dakota flips and mocks Eddie. With a withering glare, she tells him that he’s just a washed-up yes man who will do anything to stay relevant.

That was pretty harsh, but seriously, Dakota is showing attitude. I understand that she wants her album to remain as original as it was when she created it because it’s her album. But, Eddie’s right as well. As soon as she entered the world of commercialism, that album couldn’t be just hers anymore. Fortunately, Eddie isn’t giving up on her.

After finding Dakota, Eddie discovers why she’s acting up. People in her hometown mocked her and didn’t think she’d become someone. And she’s afraid to prove them right. Now, she feels that every time Trevor talks to her, he’s gonna drop her. Using that situation, Eddie manages to get through to Dakota. He makes her understand that they can only take the notes that make the album better.

It’s actually pretty great seeing them together in A Million Little Things as friends and a mentor and student. And it’s interesting to see where their career goes. Hopefully, this storyline doesn’t fizzle out too quickly.

Gary Crashes Maggie’s Date

On the other hand, Maggie’s up for a little date. Getting at Someday, she panics when she discovers that Gary is there as well. She approaches him but, when he asks if she wants him to leave, Maggie decides against it. After all, they’re adults, right?

Maggie’s date skips out though. So, Gary crashes it. When the waiting hour is up though, Maggie doesn’t appear too thrilled to be seeing Gary. As she explains, the last person she wants to be humiliated in front of is Gary. So, she heads to the back and receives Regina’s clam chowder date disaster remedy.

As Maggie heads out, later on, Gary apologizes. He admits that there was a small part of him that wanted the date to go wrong. But, he also didn’t want that to happen. Regina then pops out and hands Maggie a bottle of wine apparently from her date who didn’t show up. When Maggie realizes it’s from Gary, he immediately passes it to Regina who graciously takes the fall.

As it turns out though, it really was Gary. He still loved Maggie but, he’s afraid to put himself out there for her again. It’s also imprinted in his mind that Maggie just wants to be friends. Later on though when Maggie bids Regina goodbye, she says “Part of me wishes this wine had been from Gary.”

I swear these two should just get back together. A Million Little Things might be hinting at it. But, I need more than just hints. It’s torture seeing them skirt around each other like this because it’s hard to imagine them with other people. But, A Million Little Things also makes me wonder about the what-ifs.

Movie Deals and Dad Deals

Meanwhile, Rome has received word that Isaac Martin is coming to town. So, he immediately cancels lunch with his dad. Walter (Lou Beatty Jr.) still comes to the restaurant nevertheless causing Rome more anxiety. When Isaac arrives for the meeting though, he appears to be very distracted. A lot of producers are also calling him up and he struggles to hold even a straight 5-minute conversation with Rome.

Walter notices and comes over. Then, he strikes up a little conversation with Isaac and teases the man a bit about some of his lesser liked movies. This doesn’t upset Isaac. But, it does get on Rome’s nerves. He takes his father aside and lets everything out on him leaving the old man stunned.

Later on though, as Walter prepares to leave, Rome relents. He gets up in the middle of his meeting with Isaac and chases after his dad. After Rome apologizes, Walter apologizes in turn. He admits he misses his wife. And Rome recognizes that his dad needs to talk to someone. This time around, Walter doesn’t shrink from the idea. He even agrees as long as he only talks about his wife. Then, Rome invites him back inside.

Later on, as Rome and his dad are happily chatting away with a stranger, Rome receives a call from Isaac. The movie star isn’t as upset with being left hanging. In fact, he’s actually proud of Rome for having his priorities set straight. He’s also fully on board Rome’s movie.

Rome and his dad have such a complicated relationship. But, their relationship is very endearing and probably one of my favorites in A Million Little Things. No matter how old you are, they just show that relationships like theirs are fixable.

Derek

In the corner, Regina and Eve come out of the kitchen. And suddenly, Eve freezes. She subtly turns to Regina and points out that the stranger Rome had previously been chatting up with his dad is actually Derek. When Derek sees them, he immediately approaches with a big smile claiming he was worried about Eve and everything. When he asks if they could talk somewhere private, Eve agrees without hesitance.

As she goes to get her coat, Regina offers to call the cops. But, Eve quickly shuts it down saying it’ll make things worse especially so that Derek has to sign the parental consent forms for the baby. If not, Rome and Regina won’t be able to get the baby and Derek will use it against Eve for them to get back together. So, Eve goes with Derek in hopes he’ll sign the consent form. As I said before, this might blow up in Rome and Regina’s faces. That’s A Million Little Things for you.

A Million Little Things continues Thursday, March 5th, with “Change of Plans” at 9/8c on ABC.
