Peaky Blinders Season 1 Episode 3 Recap

[00:00:30] Tommy went to the bar for a drink. He ordered a bottle of Irish whiskey and three glasses. Grace served his order and told him that she no longer wanted to go to the races unless Tommy paid for her dress. Tommy argued that he had already given her three pounds. Grace wanted 2 pounds and 10 shillings more. Grace pointed out that he paid more for his suits, but Tommy didn’t pay for any of his suits. He explained that his suits are free, or he burns the tailor’s house down. Grace asked Tommy if he wanted her to come looking like a flower girl instead. He responded that his opinion didn’t matter because Grace wasn’t dressing up for him.

[00:03:00] Two men entered the bar and went straight for the Peaky Blinders parlor. Tommy poured them a drink, but one of the men requested to have some more. They told Tommy about rumors from the factory down the road. Most of the shops there were Irish, and there was a robbery of weapons. Everyone thought the Peaky Blinders were behind it. Tommy told them that the men spreading hearsay must be dreaming. The men told Tommy that they were interested in buying the weapons for the IRA. Tommy didn’t believe the men had real connections with the IRA, so one of the men started singing an Irish anthem. The other man had enough of his partner’s antics and told him to stop. The man wouldn’t stop singing until they got up and left.

[00:06:00] Grace asked Tommy what the Irish men wanted. Tommy told her that the Irish men were nobody. With the new information she acquired, Grace agreed to go with Tommy to the races. Tommy gave Grace the money she requested but told her to buy a red dress. Meanwhile, Freddie and Ada met under the bridge to go get married. Ada asked Freddie how she looked. He froze and told Ada that she looked like an angel. Inspector Campbell received the information from Grace regarding The Black Swan Inn. He asked Sergeant Moss about the place, but he denied that it was a den for the IRA. The two of them argued as Moss didn’t like how Inspector Campbell belittled him and his men.

[00:09:30] A drunkard stumbled out of The Black Swan Inn. Grace followed him around for a few minutes until the man needed to pee. He turned the corner, and Grace lost sight of him. She followed the man and turned the corner. The man grabbed Grace as he knew someone was following him. The two of them struggled to gain the upper hand. The man wanted to take Grace in for interrogation on behalf of the IRA, so she shot the man using her gun. Grace fled the scene while feeling squeamish. Someone was also following Grace. Tommy went to see Aunt Pol. She asked him if he was armed, Tommy responded that he wasn’t. Aunt Pol told Tommy about Ada and Freddie’s wedding. She told him that they hadn’t left town as he ordered them to.

[00:12:00] Tommy wanted to know where Ada and Freddie were hiding. Aunt Pol assured Tommy that she would take care of them, but he promised the coppers that Freddie wouldn’t return to town. He added that it was part of the deal. Aunt Pol asked Tommy what happened to family meetings. She promised Tommy that she would handle the issue and resolve it peacefully. Tommy gave Aunt Pol an ultimatum, she needs to handle Freddie and Ada, or he would. Grace couldn’t sleep; she smoked and drank to pass the time away. Moss informed Campbell about the man from The Black Swan Inn. He told Campbell that someone saw a woman leaving the body on the street. Sergeant Moss asked if Campbell’s operative was behind the killing and if she had a shoot-to-kill order just like in Belfast.

[00:15:00] Inspector Campbell responded that she wasn’t responsible for the killing. He created an alibi for Grace and looked the other way. Aunt Pol visited Freddie and Ada and tried to bribe him out of Birmingham. Freddie stubbornly declined, but Ada insisted that they take the money and go on a honeymoon. Aunt Pol had already gotten them tickets for a ferry ride to New York. Freddie asked Aunt Pol if he could sleep on his decision first. She left the money on the dresser and left the house. Grace met with Campbell at the museum. He scolded Grace because her job was only recon and report. Grace responded that she did what she had to do. Campbell was worried for her well-being because he knew killing a man would affect her.

[00:18:00] Tommy went to Mr. Zhang. He tailored a suit for Billy Kimber. Tommy knew Billy would come by to pick up his suit. Tommy warned him about the Lee clan on tomorrow’s race. Billy told Tommy that he could handle the Lee clan. Tommy didn’t doubt Billy’s capabilities; however, he was just warning him as a friend. Tommy bid him farewell and would see him tomorrow at the race. Billy told Tommy to bring his barmaid to the races. He assured her that Grace was already invited. Meanwhile, Freddie continued to rally the people to go on strike. They heard whistles from the coppers who were looking for them. He asked the men to raise their hands if they were willing to go on strike. Everyone raised their hands as they dispersed from the meeting.

[00:21:00] Tommy went to church at the request of his brother. Arthur was having a bit of a moment because he didn’t know what was happening around him. People kept asking a lot of questions about Ada getting married, the man from the Black Swan that got killed, and the guns from the BSA factory. He kept answering people, saying that he didn’t know, which got him wondering if he would ever find the answers to those questions. Tommy apologized; he told Arthur that he was going to tell him about the guns but couldn’t find the right timing. Tommy explained that they now have machine guns, and the coppers didn’t. He asked Arthur to come with him for a surprise. The two of them made their way out of the church and into the Garrison pub.

[00:24:00] Tommy told Arthur that the pub is now his own business. Tommy remembered Arthur telling him during the war that if they ever got back, he wanted to own a pub. Arthur asked Tommy if the pub was for sale. Tommy responded that everything was for sale when it came to the Peaky Blinders. Arthur knew nothing about running a pub. Tommy told him that he’d be splendid at it because Arthur spent the majority of his life inside a pub. Harry came from the back and asked them what they wanted to drink. Tommy faced Harry with a smirk on his face. Tommy exited the pub that evening to find his front tires were punctured. He thought the kids did it, but Sergeant Moss came out of the shadows.

[00:27:00] Moss informed Tommy about the return of Freddie Thorne. Inspector Campbell wanted Tommy to deliver Freddie to the police. Moss threatened to arrest Ada as Freddie’s accomplice if he didn’t comply. Tommy responded that he was handling the Freddie situation as Moss left. The next day, Ada rushed to the Garrison bar in search of Tommy or Freddie. She feared that the two would start killing each other if they ever crossed paths. Ada was right as Freddie found Tommy and pointed a gun at his head. Freddie returned the money and tickets that Aunt Pol gave him. Freddie wanted to know about the guns, but Tommy didn’t want to tell him. Tommy disapproved of his marriage to Ada. He knew that Freddie was just using Ada for his cause.

[00:29:00] Freddie lowered his weapon and denied all allegations. He told Tommy that their love was pure, and he wasn’t using Ada for his own gains. Tommy left Freddie and went to see Aunt Pol. He returned the money and tickets that she gave Freddie. Tommy explained that her compassion is useless in their situation. He added that it was time he took matters into his own hands. That night, Freddie’s nightmares continued to haunt him. It was Danny, Freddie, and Tommy inside a tunnel in France. They were waiting for someone digging from the other side. They could hear the pickaxes and shovels getting closer and closer. Suddenly, a man burst forth from the wall of dirt. Another man entered the tunnel and shot them.

[00:32:30] Tommy woke up as Danny visited him. Danny told Tommy about a rumor he had heard in London. Everyone thought the Peaky Blinders killed the IRA man. Tommy wants Danny to find a representative for the IRA to parley with. Danny knew that Tommy was going through the same nightmares that he was. Tommy explained that some nights are worst than others. He could either get a few hours of sleep or no sleep at all. The next day, Tommy woke up and found a note from Danny. He stated on the note that he’d do his duty. Tommy went to the Garrison bar to speak with Grace. She told him that Ada came to the pub yesterday looking for him. Grace explained the difficulty of their situation and the problems they were causing for Ada and her pregnancy.

[00:38:00] Grace wanted to know what Freddie and Tommy were fighting about, but he didn’t answer her question. Tommy changed the topic and told Grace to meet him at the pub around nine in the morning. Grace told Tommy that she had bought a dress as he requested. The next day, Tommy and Grace were getting ready for the races. Both of them got dressed and took their pistols with them. Tommy went to curly to get his car. Everyone was going to be at the races, the police, the Lee clan, even Billy Kimber and his men. Charlie told Tommy that he ess going to need more men if he was going to come back alive. Tommy confidently told Charlie that he was going to the races with Grace only. Tommy picked Grace up at the bar, and they made their way to the Cheltenham racetrack.

[00:41:00] Back at Curly’s, Arthur and Johnny were preparing their cousins for war. They were only a handful of men and a few children. Arthur told them that they wouldn’t be keeping any money as it belonged to Billy Kimber. They were going to the races only to kill the Lee clan members. They rode a truck and went on their way. Tommy and Grace arrived at the races, but they entered through the back way. Tommy instructed Grace to impersonate Lady Sarah of Connemara. The two of them successfully made their way into the party. Tommy invited Grace to dance. He invited Grace to pass the time while Arthur and the Peaky Blinders work on their business deal. Tommy took Grace to the dance floor in order to get Billy Kimber’s attention. Tommy’s plan worked as Billy noticed Grace in her pretty red dress.

[00:45:00] Meanwhile, Arthur and the gang corner one of the Lee clan members named Raz inside the men’s bathroom at the races. The gang took all the money from Raz and told him that the Peaky Blinders are Billy Kimber’s new security detail. Arthur took the money to Tommy who took it straight to Billy’s table. He poured the money on the table while making demands. Billy wasn’t interested with Tommy’s demands because his eyes were set on Grace. Billy directed Tommy to his accountant while he asked Grace to dance. Grace agreed because she didn’t have any choice. Tommy and Billy’s accountant were making headway in their deal, so Billy approached him to ask for another condition. Tommy went back to Grace and told her that she was going to have a head start with Billy for 2 hours.

[00:50:00] Grace didn’t want to go with Billy all alone, but she knew she could defend herself. Tommy pointed out that if Grace wanted to work with the Peaky Blinders, she needed to make sacrifices. Before Billy left with Grace, he made a side bet with Tommy that he could seduce Grace and fuck her within one hour. Billy allowed Tommy to have his wife for the 2 hours as well. Tommy and Billy’s wife took his car back to Billy’s house. The wife asked Tommy if Grace was a prostitute, but he didn’t know who Grace truly was.

[00:52:00] At Billy’s house, Grace was preparing her pistol for easy access. Billy wanted to dance, but Grace stiffened her body. Billy tried to kiss Grace, so she pushed him away and demanded to have a cigarette. Grace was about to pull out her pistol when Billy dropped a wine glass on purpose. He told Grace to pick the glass up, but she responded that Billy should pick up his own glass. Billy told Grace that she was a barmaid, and she would do as told. Billy couldn’t take it anymore; he forced himself unto Grace while bending on the billiard table. Grace struggled to reach her purse as Billy tried to rape her. Tommy arrived with Billy’s wife to stop him. Billy told Tommy that he still had an hour left on their agreement.

[00:54:30] Tommy made up an alibi by telling Billy that Grace was a whore with syphilis. Grace and Tommy left Billy’s house as soon as possible. Grace was mad at Tommy for offering her as a prostitute. She started the day as Lady Sarah of Connemara and ended it as a whore. Although Tommy offered Grace to Billy, he did change his mind and save her. Grace wanted to know why Billy changed his mind, but he didn’t respond.
