Peaky Blinders Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

[00:00:50] Freddie and Ada just got back in Birmingham. Freddie spoke to one of his associates and updated him about their plans for a revolution. Tommy was walking down the street when Jeremiah, the preacher, approached him. Jeremiah told him that Freddie and Ada had just gotten back. He tried following them, but Freddie was too good at escaping. Tommy told Jeremiah to just be on the lookout. Tommy went back to the betting shop just before it closed. He noticed a horse pulling a gypsy’s carriage. Inside the carriage were a bunch of men waiting for the betting shop to close down. A small boy managed to creep inside the betting shop while they were closing down. Tommy and Aunt Pol headed out to the Garrison pub. Aunt Pol felt something odd before leaving, but she didn’t mind it.

[00:04:30] The carriage went closer as they saw Tommy and Aunt Pol leave. The men got out of the carriage while the boy opened the door for them. They positioned themselves inside the house and surprised the guard of the betting shop. They ransacked the place for the money that Tommy and Arthur took from the Lee clan. Meanwhile, Tommy and Aunt Pol arrived at the Garrison Pub. Johnny was having issues with his kid. He told them that his children needed a mother which was why he wanted to marry again. They laughed at Johnny and asked him if the woman knew he wanted to marry her. Johnny responded that he had already proposed, and the girl said yes. With everything settled, they wanted to know who he planned to marry. Johnny told them that he wanted to marry Lizzie Stark.

[00:06:30] Everyone tried to control their laughter. Aunt Pol told Johnny that Lizzie was a strong woman, but she didn’t want him to marry her. Johnny told Aunt Pol not to continue with her statement. It turned out that Lizzie was a prostitute. No one wanted Johnny to marry Lizzie, but he didn’t listen and asked for Tommy’s blessing. Johnny wouldn’t marry Lizzie if he told him not to, but he wanted Tommy to give Lizzie a chance. Before Tommy could respond, a bunch of kids entered the parlor and told them what had happened to the betting shop. They went back to the betting shop to see what happened. The guard told them that the Lees took everything they could. Tommy saw a wire cutter on the table. Tommy and Arthur understood the wire cutter joke. They knew a hand grenade was somewhere inside the betting shop.

[00:10:00] Tommy realized that the hand grenade wasn’t in the betting shop. He knew the Lees wanted him dead and only him. He went out to the family car and saw Finn playing in it. Finn told Tommy that he was pretending to be him. Tommy asked Finn which car door he had opened to get in. Finn responded that he climbed to get in the car. Tommy told Finn to climb out, but he didn’t. Finn got out of the driver’s side door and set the hand grenade off. Tommy saw the grenade and acted quickly. He threw the grenade out the garage while telling passerby’s to brace themselves. Tommy told Finn that he shouldn’t pretend to be him. Tommy went to the gypsies to settle the war between them. Johnny Dogs got him ten minutes with the head of the family.

[00:12:30] The head of the family wanted Tommy to put his hand on the bible, but he didn’t believe in it. Tommy told her that he didn’t go there to tell lies. The failed attempt on his life almost cost a child’s life. Tommy wanted their feud to end, so he handed her a bullet with Billy Kimber’s name on it. The head of the Lee clan thought Billy Kimber was Tommy’s ally. He responded that Billy isn’t the brains of the operation. Tommy told her about the deal he had with Billy Kimber, but the head of the Lee clan didn’t trust him. He pleaded with her to talk family business since they were family on his mother’s side. Meanwhile, Freddie was taking a bath and asked Ada to do his back. Ada changed the topic and asked about the envelope full of money.

[00:14:30] Ada wanted to know about Freddie’s plan for her and their baby. He kept taking risks for the cause and their revolution while they were rotting inside a rundown apartment. Ada took a chair and sat beside Freddie. She grabbed his crotch and asked who he was loyal to. Tommy sat inside his parlor at the Garrison pub. Aunt Pol arrived just as Tommy finished opening an anonymous telegram. Aunt Pol asked Tommy to hear out her strategy. Later on, Tommy met with Inspector Campbell. He gave him the address of Stanly Chapman. Campbell wanted Freddie Thorne, but Tommy convinced him that Stanly Chapman was a bigger fish than Freddie. Tommy just wanted assurance that Campbell would allow Freddie and his sister to leave town in exchange for Stanly Chapman. Campbell agreed but warned Tommy about the bigger picture.

[00:18:00] Inspector Campbell told Tommy that Winston Churchill was growing impatient about the stolen weapons. He threatened to kill Tommy and his whole family if the weapons weren’t returned before he got fired. Campbell added that he would only spare Finn and throw him in jail, where he’d surely meet his maker. Campbell decided to leave after threatening Tommy and his family. Tommy wanted to kill Campbell so badly. He pulled out his pistol but stopped himself from killing Campbell. The next day, Campbell rounded his men to the address that Tommy provided. The police broke his door down and arrested Stanly. They dragged his ass out of the house for everyone to see. Sergeant Moss handed Campbell the envelope full of money that Freddie gave him. Campbell told Chapman that he’s fucked.

[00:22:00] Stanly refused to talk, but Campbell knew that they just needed to persuade him. Campbell wanted to know about Freddie’s location despite his deal with Tommy. Moss thought he made a deal with Tommy and gave him his word. Campbell explained that he wouldn’t honor his agreement with a Peaky Blinder. Inspector Campbell began interrogating Stanly Chapman for information on Freddie Thorne. Freddie was visiting his mother’s grave. Aunt Pol is waiting for him at the cemetery. She warned Freddie about Stanly being arrested. Aunt Pol told him about the deal that Tommy made with Campbell. She also revealed that the whole plan was Ada’s idea in order to leave the rat-hole that they were hiding in. Freddie told Aunt Pol that Stanly didn’t know his address; none of them knew each other’s addresses. He added that they just killed a good man for their personal gain.

[00:25:00] Freddie refused to leave Birmingham. He told Aunt Pol that the only time he’d leave was inside a wooden box. Aunt Pol threatened Freddie that if he laid his hands on Ada, she would personally place him inside a wooden box. Freddie went home and stared at a sleeping Ada while contemplating his next move. Inspector Campbell had a new problem in his hand; Stanly Chapman died due to intense interrogation. He didn’t care for Chapman because all he wanted was the address of Freddie Thorne. He ordered Sergeant Moss to find some stairs and throw Stanly’s body down it. Billy Kimber and his accountant went to visit Tommy and the Peaky Blinders betting shop. They were pleased with the results of their alliance with the Peaky Blinders. Given they were in charge of security, Billy hadn’t lost a single penny from the races.

[00:28:00] Billy and his accountant toured the betting shop. Tommy introduced them to his men, who would be positioned at an upcoming event for his disposal. The accountant handed over a piece of paper to Tommy before leaving. Tommy gathered the family to tell them what the piece of paper was. He showed it to them and told everyone that they now had an official betting license from the board of control. Everyone celebrated as they were now an official business. After the celebration, Arthur was counting money when Grace brought a crate full of cigarettes. She told Arthur that it smelled like rotting water, and some of the cigarettes had been eaten away by rats. Grace asked Arthur if the cigarettes were stolen. Arthur told Grace not to ask questions but to check his adding skills.

[00:31:00] Grace told Arthur to start fresh with the Garrison pub. She told him that the cigarettes were in no condition to be sold. Arthur told Grace that they never kept contraband on dry land as per Tommy’s orders. He added that they kept the contraband on petrol boats near junctions so that they could get them away quickly. Grace left and told Campbell about the contraband stashes owned by the Peaky Blinders. Inspector Campbell took Sergeant Moss and some of his men to the stashes. He prayed to God that the weapons were stashed there. They raided all three stashes but only found cigarettes and whisky. While Grace was closing down the pub, Tommy waited for her outside. He asked Grace why she’s been asking Arthur a lot of questions regarding their business. He invited Grace for a little walk to talk about things.

[00:33:00] The two of them entered the church to talk about things in private. Tommy told Grace about Billy’s accountant. He confessed that he also needed someone to run their books and keep things in check. Grace told Tommy that he was good with math and books; however, he couldn’t keep tabs on everything. Despite Grace lying about her previous job and her religion, Tommy still offered her a job. Grace willingly accepted whatever he needed her to do. Tommy also confessed his feelings for Grace as he kissed her inside the church. Tommy got up and told Grace he’d show her around tomorrow.

[00:36:00] The next day, Tommy drove around and saw Lizzie. He invited her for a ride so that they could talk. Tommy asked Lizzie why she didn’t tell Johnny that she had been his whore for the past two years. Lizzie responded that the past was the past, and Johnny didn’t need to know that they had been together. Tommy was pleased with Lizzie’s answer; he explained that Johnny vouched for her that she had changed. While they were talking, Tommy dropped 8 pounds in front of Lizzie and offered it to her as a wedding gift. Tommy wanted to spend one last night with Lizzie before she got married. Lizzie didn’t want to accept the 8 pounds, but greed got the better of her. She took the 8 pounds and asked Tommy where they would go. Tommy was disappointed; he knew that Lizzie wouldn’t change, and he was correct.

[00:38:30] Tommy told Lizzie that she could keep the 8 pounds. He added that Johnny would make his own decision regarding their relationship, but he would tell him the truth. Lizzie got mad at Tommy for tricking her. She got out of the car and left. Meanwhile, Grace met with Campbell inside the museum again. He told Grace that the weapons were not at the stashes. Campbell added that they left the crates untouched so that they wouldn’t compromise her identity. Grace informed Campbell of her promotion within the Peaky Blinders. Campbell didn’t like the news as he reminded Grace about remembering who she truly was when going undercover. Grace didn’t like Campbell’s tone, and he was implying that she might fall in love with Tommy like how he had fallen for her. Grace left Campbell without saying another word.

[00:41:00] Tommy saw Johnny cleaning the car. He asked Tommy for a favor. Johnny wanted to borrow the car to take Lizzie and his kids to the country for a bit of celebration. Tommy told Johnny the truth about what happened yesterday with Lizzie. He added that Johnny could take Lizzie to the country, and he could marry her, but he needed to know the truth. Johnny took the keys and boarded the car. He wanted to start the engine and leave, but he couldn’t. Johnny exited the car, threw the keys to the ground, and left. Tommy went to the pub to drink and celebrate. He told Grace to grab another glass. Tommy told Grace to make a toast. She raised her glass and made a toast. She wished that Tommy might spend 30 minutes in heaven before the devil found out he was dead.

[00:43:30] Tommy whipped out Grace’s contract. He wanted to celebrate her new employment. The paper read “Bookkeeper” with the Shelby Brothers LTD. Tommy’s first job for Grace was to deliver a letter for Ada. There was an upcoming family event, and Tommy wanted Ada to be there. Tommy needed Grace to find Ada because she only went to a bathhouse on women-only days. Grace asked Tommy if Ada was walking into a trap, but Tommy responded that nothing in her contract required her to ask questions. Grace kept the champagne that she ordered for their celebration. Tommy went back to his apartment and heard a noise from inside. He approached the door cautiously and took out his pistol. Tommy entered his apartment and saw Johnny. He spoke to Lizzie, but she denied the allegations. Lizzie told Johnny that Tommy was a liar.

[00:46:00] Johnny took Lizzie’s friends out for a drink, and they told him the truth. Lizzie continued to sell herself to her regular clients. Tommy told Johnny that they were brothers and they needed to watch out for each other. He instructed Johnny to go home and get some rest. They were going to end their war with the Lees tomorrow. The next day, Johnny went to the Lee camp with Arthur and Tommy. They took a handful of men from the Peaky Blinders, but only Johnny was carrying weapons. The group entered the camp, and Johnny noticed something strange. They were all walking into shotgun range, but they didn’t care. Tommy told Johnny that they were there for a wedding. Everyone took out flowers from their pockets and gave them to Johnny.

[00:50:00] Tommy told Johnny that he was going to marry one of the Lee girls to unite their families. Johnny didn’t want to marry some stranger, but he didn’t have any choice. If they left, there would be a war between their families, and they couldn’t have a war when they were so close to their goal. The head of the Lee clan approved of Johnny, and the wedding began. Aunt Pol and Ada arrived just as Johnny knelt on the pew beside his future wife. Tommy called the truce a family day. He asked why Freddie didn’t join them. Ada told Tommy that Freddie wasn’t talking to her. After the wedding, the families celebrated their truce with song and dance. Everyone drank and cheered as they celebrated the newlyweds. Aunt Pol was worried about Ada as she kept on dancing and drinking. She asked Tommy to stop Ada.

[00:53:00] Tommy approached Ada and requested she stop dancing. She was drunk and wanted to pick a fight with Tommy. Ada blamed Tommy for everything that had happened to her, but before they could calm Ada down, her water broke. They rushed her to a midwife. Arthur, Tommy, and Johnny were ready to get drunk on his wedding night while Ada gave birth. Aunt Pol told them that one man should stay for Ada’s sake. Tommy allowed Freddie to come without harming him. Aunt Pol was glad that Tommy was being merciful. As the three of them enjoyed their drinks at the Garrison pub, Freddie ran towards Ada. He arrived just in time to see his baby boy. Ada handed their baby to Freddie. He held his baby for a minute before the police arrived. They dragged Freddie out of the house while Ada pleaded to them not to hurt him.

[00:57:30] Aunt Pol consoled Ada as she cried after the police took Freddie away. Aunt Pol went to the pub to inform the boys about Ada’s son. She charged at Tommy to tell him that the police had taken Freddie away. Tommy didn’t know what had happened, and he had a blank look on his face. Aunt Pol spat at him and called him a liar.
