'Pennyworth' Official Trailer Offers First Younger Look at Bruce Wayne's Butler

The Batman mythos continues to expand on the small screen. A month after FOX’s Gotham aired its series finale, EPIX now leaps into the spotlight to debut the first look trailer for Pennyworth, the Batman prequel series centered on Bruce Wayne’s trusty butler.

The Pennyworth official trailer features a fresh, new look at Alfred Pennyworth, something that has never been seen in the comics and movies before. He’s played by The Imitation Game‘s Jack Bannon and also sports the same cockney accent that Michael Caine had in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. The show’s logline describes it as “the story of Alfred Pennyworth, a former British special-forces officer living in London and working for Bruce Wayne’s father.”

Pennyworth: A Change of Pace and Aesthetic

And if you came here expecting something similar to Gotham, think again. Pennyworth is set in the ’60s, a couple of years before the birth of Bruce. With Alfred being discharged from his military service, he goes on to start his own security firm (despite having said in the trailer that he doesn’t like violence). He crosses paths with Thomas Wayne, who’s desperately in need of Alfred’s services. Little does Alfred know that Thomas’ demands go beyond just simple protection—he needs to tie up loose ends.

Things get a little bit more drastic when a woman named Esmé is kidnapped by Bet Sykes, the sadistic competitor to Alfred’s security firm. It’s unclear what Sykes’ vendetta against Thomas is, but the trailer shows a building conflict that Alfred would have to wedge himself in. It’s a colorful take on Bruce’s butler, but one that employs amazing ’60s action and a little bit of old school espionage.

Pennyworth is the brainchild of former Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller and CSI‘s Danny Cannon. Epix greenlit the series in May 2018, with 10 episodes slated for its first season. Joining Bannon in the cast roster is Ben Aldrige as Thomas Wayne, Paloma Faith as Bet Sykes, Emma Paetz as Martha Kane, Ryan Fletcher as Wallace “Dave Boy” MacDougall, and Hainsley Lloyd Bennett as Deon “Bazza” Bashford.

Pennyworth premieres Sunday, July 28th, at 9/8c on Epix.
