Riverdale Season 2 To Primarily Focus On A 'Broken' Betty, More Revelations

Most of “Riverdale” Season 1’s mysteries were driven by the Blossom family’s secrets. But when the show returns for the second season, the mystery will now shift to Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart). We first saw her as a wholesome girl next door and then transformed to a vicious fireball as she moved one from the different happenings in her life: her unrequited crush on Archie, the love interest between her and Jughead Jones, standing up to her overprotective and domineering mother, and fought for what she believed in the end.

Once “Riverdale” Season 2 comes back, Betty’s strength and straightforwardness will be in shambles. As you can remember, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) is now caught up with the Southside Serpents and is ready to move to Southside High. This puts their relationship in complicated proportions—and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. She’ll also have some kind of beef with Veronica Lodge, while Jughead and Archie (KJ Apa) will also have tension. We also know that season 2 will have a new looming threat, but it also looks like Betty will be a part of that conflict.

Riverdale Season 2: Betty’s Downward Spiral

According to Collider, Reinhart revealed during the “Riverdale” panel at the San Diego Comic-Con that she will be the central focus of the first half of the show, and viewers will witness a more hopeless and vulnerable side of Betty. “She’s thrown into something that she never imagined and her circumstances break her,” Reinhart revealed.

Reinhart also confirmed that the romance between Betty and Archie won’t be addressed this time, but the strains on her friendship with Veronica will definitely resurface. “They are put to the test a little bit,” Reinhart said, while co-star Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge) added that “the audience will be hurt” while seeing it happen.

And as we see Betty go through the fire with her current relationships, Jughead and Archie’s will also be put in jeopardy. Sprouse also revealed in the panel that Archie will become a “force of pure morality, vigilance, and righteousness and Jughead becomes a kind of character that knows that sometimes you have to do bad to do good.” With this four-way friendship in limbo, there’s only one pair who won’t have any kind of problems—Archie and Veronica.

Meanwhile, Cheryl Blossom will be meaner and get a new love interest as well. Archie will “go as far as he can” to avenge the shooting of his father (and maybe a potential death?), and the show will dive deep into the supernatural and criminal elements. From the looks of it, it seems like the show is really headed towards a darker and more dangerous path for Archie and friends.

“Riverdale” Season 2 premieres Wednesday, October 11th on The CW.
