'Snowpiercer' TV Series Finally Gets Long-Awaited TNT Premiere Date

All aboard everybody! The Snowpiercer series is taking off. TNT has finally set a premiere date for its adaptation of the post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel series and Bong Joon Ho’s movie of the same name. The long-awaited series, starring Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs, will premiere Sunday, May 31 at 9/8c on the cable channel.

Snowpiercer started development five years ago. Beginning at TNT, it then moved to TBS then back to TNT again. In addition to that, it also went through a reshuffling on the showrunner post. Josh Friedman wrote the original pilot and was set to serve as showrunner. But in 2018, Friedman exited the show citing “creative differences.” He was then replaced by Orphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson. The only thing that didn’t change was the original cast members including Connelly and Diggs who stayed attached to the project from beginning to now.

According to The Wrap, Manson declared that almost none of the original pilot is left in the show. “I think there’s a little piece of a sort of a special effects set-piece,” he said at the TCA press tour. “But it was a full rebirth of the series when I came on. I pitched a different world.”

In regards to the show’s five-year gestation period, the show’s stars didn’t seem to mind at all. According to Diggs who appeared alongside Manson and his castmates at the TCA, five years as a particularly long one. To put it simply, Diggs said, “Takes a long time to make really good s—.”

Connelly also added that that the beginning of the show and what it is now are two different things. “I feel like they’re different projects really,”  Connelly said. “Really, this is what I think of when I think of Snowpiercer — this version.”

In addition to finally getting a premiere date, Snowpierecer has also already been renewed for a second season according to The Wrap. Set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, Snowpiercer centers on the remnants of humanity who inhabit a perpetually moving train, with 1001 cars, that circles the globe. And class warfare, social injustice, and the politics of survival play out to create this riveting show adaptation.

In addition to Connelly and Diggs, the show also stars Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, and Iddo Goldberg. Other cast members include Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, and Jaylin Fletcher.
