The Haunting of Bly Manor Season 1 Episode 2 Recap - The Pupil

[00:01:00] Dani began the day by talking to Miles and Flora. Mrs. Grose started mopping the hallway to remove the muddy footprints from last night. “Mrs. Grose was no stranger to muddy footprints,” the storyteller narrates. She would always begin her day by mopping the floors and removing the stains of the impressions—it would always start from outside towards the forbidden area of the manor. Then, Miles explained that the door got stuck, and they couldn’t open it. “It’s just a bit of mud,” he answered when Dani asked about the prints outside. Dani forgave the children for the mishaps last night, but she didn’t believe their explanation. Flora picked the doll under her dresser and approached Dani.

[00:02:30] Miles took the doll and threw it down the laundry chute before Flora could speak. Dani took the mop from Mrs. Grose and gave it to Miles. As punishment for throwing away Flora’s doll, he’s going to finish mopping the mud. Miles thought it wasn’t fair, but Dani told him it’s just a bit of mud. Mrs. Grose was okay with the punishment. She told Dani that she would see the muddy prints every few weeks and would always mop them up. Dani accompanied Flora to get her doll from the cellar. Flora stopped at the kitchen and told Dani, “I don’t like the cellar.” She wanted to stay in the kitchen with Owen instead, so Dani asked him if it’s alright. She then explained that Miles threw away Flora’s doll, so she needed to get it back. Owen agreed to keep Flora company while Dani went downstairs.

[00:04:30] Dani went down the cellar. The switch on the stairs didn’t work, so she needed to find the switch directly on the light bulb instead. Dani found it and pulled it, turning on the light. She found Flora’s doll standing under the laundry chute; she also saw a couple of dolls kept in the cellar. After grabbing the doll, Dani turned off the light, ran upstairs, and closed the door. Upon leaving, one of the dolls inside the cellar moved on its own. Dani and Flora went back upstairs. She asked Flora if she would hang her stick dolls inside her room. “No, I took it down because it doesn’t work,” Flora replied. She then told Flora to get dressed while she looked for Miles. Downstairs in the study room, she found Miles.

[00:07:00] Dani called out to Miles, but he wasn’t responding. He’s stared out the window reminiscing his time at boarding school six months ago. It was his first day at boarding school. Father Stack came into the room to start their class about religion. He discussed a scripture from the Bible on how Jesus cast out the demon named “Legion” from a man into a herd of pigs. The pigs then drowned themselves in a nearby lake. Father Stack told them different versions of the scripture, but all the scriptures were the same on how Jesus cast the demon away. One of the boys asked Father Stack why the scriptures were different. “Man is fallible,” he answered. Then Miles asked why the demons needed Jesus to approve their entry into the pigs.

[00:10:00] “Yes, they did need permission,” Father Stack answered Miles. But the man also allowed the demons into his body which is why he was possessed, he added. After class, Father Stack gave Miles a letter written by Flora. He told Miles to check the Bible for John 16:22, a brief passage that will help him during tough times. Miles left the classroom and studied the Bible after classes. As he was sitting in church reading the passage, Miles sighed—he didn’t fully understand what he read.

[00:12:00] Father Stack called the students after spending some time outside. He spotted Miles and his friend climbing up a tree. “It’s nearly time! Shall we go down?” his friend asked, but he kept climbing higher. Father Stack called out to Miles, but he blacked out and fell from the tree. Miles broke his left arm and limped to bed that night as his friend gave him the bottom bunk of their double-deck bed. “Why’d you jump?” his friend asked. “I didn’t jump; I fell,” Miles replied. “I saw you jump,” his friend insisted. “Well, if you ever need anything, I’m here for you, mate, okay?” his friend assured and bid him good night.

[00:15:00] A kid alarmed Father Stack to stop a fight the next day. It was Miles and his friend Hooper. Miles placed Hooper in a chokehold as he slowly fell asleep. Father Stack arrived before things got worse and told all the children to get back to class while attending Hooper. He spoke to Miles to find out what happened, telling him violence isn’t the way to deal with loss. He knew Miles was going through something, but he didn’t entirely understand his feelings. Miles went back to the demon story: he told Father Stack that Jesus wasn’t fair to the pigs. Father Stack agreed, but he told Miles that God works in mysterious ways, and only he knows what’s fair or not. “They’re not coming back?” Miles asked Father Stack.

[00:18:00] “I’m afraid not,” Father Stack replied. Miles told him it’s unfair that bad people could come back while his parents couldn’t. After a while, Father Stack was cleaning up in church when he heard the door open, and the floorboards creak. He checked it, but all he saw was the door closing again. While he returned, a child tiptoed to the altar behind him. Father Stack removed his stole and hung it up in the back room. As he went back out to the altar, Father Stack froze, seeing something on the table. Pidge, his pet pigeon, dead with a broken neck, was left on the table. After the incident, Miles is in the headmaster’s office with Father Stack and two other priests.

[00:21:00] The headmaster wants to expel Miles, but Father Stack wants to help him. They wanted Miles to explain why he killed the pigeon, but he didn’t respond. For what he did, they wanted Miles to apologize; he did, but for not doing something worse to the bird, like beheading it or spilling out its innards. They couldn’t believe what Miles said. The headmaster didn’t have any choice but to call Miles’ uncle and expel him. Disappointed at Miles, Father Stack came out of the headmaster’s office. He didn’t even respond to Miles’ apology. Hooper retook the bottom bunk at home and found Flora’s letter to Miles. He opened it and found a drawing of Flora with the words “Come Home.” Miles didn’t do the things to cause trouble; he did it to go home.

[00:23:30] Miles was holding the Bible in his room. He went to Flora’s room to tell Dani that he’s finished cleaning up. Dani went over to check his progress, and she was impressed. “Why don’t you come to teach your sister how to do it?” she told Miles. Miles didn’t want to, but Dani didn’t give him much choice. Jamie entered the kitchen and saw Owen having tea with Hannah. “The new missus put the children to it,” Hannah told Jamie, referring to the chores, so she didn’t have anything to do. But later on, although she couldn’t believe it, she was also impressed when she watched Dani and the children do some gardening outside, giving them her approval when Dani asked her how they were doing. Jamie told Hannah she could get used to the children doing all the work.

[00:25:00] Hannah responded she didn’t like seeing the children punished. She told Jamie it’s her fault for leaving her muddy prints inside the manor. Jamie answered she always wiped her feet before entering the manor and added that it was high time the children learned to do things independently. Owen came to the garden to bring them some drinks. Jamie teased Owen a bit and asked him if he saw Dani as a beauty. Owen was tongue-tied as Jamie continued teasing him. But romances didn’t bring good things in Bly, Hannah knew. Owen told Hannah that he’ll always have his eyes for her and left them to enjoy the rest of their break.

[00:27:00] Hannah told Jamie about the crack on the wall in the kitchen. “I’ll get round to it,” Jamie responded. That afternoon, Flora went to Dani’s room and helped her clean up. She was playing around with a pair of glasses when Dani arrived. Dani felt uneasy upon seeing the glasses. “I didn’t break them. I promise. They were like this already,” Flora told Dani. She took it from Flora and placed it on the bedside table, left the room, and went outside for some air, panicking and sobbing on the way out. “You all right?” Jamie asked Dani. She thought Dani was crying because of the children but managed to get Dani to laugh by telling her a joke about plants.

[00:29:30] Jamie continued making Dani laugh with her jokes, and told her she’s doing a great job with the children. After their talk, Jamie went inside the manor to check the crack on the wall Hannah was telling her. She wondered where the damage was because she didn’t see anything on the spot where Hannah told her. Jamie saw Miles leaving the manor and asked him where he was going. “Heading back to the garden to pull more weeds,” Miles told Jamie. The shadowy figure appeared in the mirror while Dani was cleaning her nails. She opened the medicine cabinet to get rid of it, closed the cabinet without looking at the mirror, and left the bathroom. But before closing the cabinet, the figure disappeared.

[00:31:30] Everyone is at the kitchen preparing dinner with Owen. Miles arrived and wanted to speak with Dani in private. Flora answered the phone, but no one spoke on the other end. Owen took the phone from Flora to check for himself. When he confirmed no one spoke from the other end, he hung the phone up. Miles apologized for all the things that happened. He gave her a bouquet of roses and whispered in her ear. “I think Flora just misses Ms. Jessel terribly. So, we play little games to keep her from feeling sad,” Miles told Dani. He then tucked her hair behind her ear, which creeped Dani out. Miles whistled as he made his way to the kitchen. Dani went to the garden and found Jamie—angry at Miles for ruining her roses.

[00:33:30] “Hey, he’s just a kid,” Dani told Jamie to calm down and that she didn’t have to hurt Miles over some flowers. Jamie was furious at Miles; Dani knew Miles had done something wrong. “I’ll talk to him,” she told Jamie. Dani prepared a surprise for the children and invited Hannah to join them. She didn’t want to and told Dani that she needed to sleep. The children were clean and ready for bed when Dani told them about the surprise. She told them they could play any game they liked for just a bit longer, so Flora asked to play hide-and-seek. She begged Miles to play, so he agreed. Dani counted off as they looked for a place to hide.

[00:36:00] Flora went to the attic while Miles went downstairs. Dani went downstairs first. She was looking inside the classroom when a woman dressed in black appeared by the other door. When Dani noticed something moving in her peripheral vision, she followed it. She didn’t see anyone, so she went back upstairs. Then, Dani tried checking in the old wing for the siblings. She saw an old family picture of Mr. and Mrs. Wingrave along with Henry, Miles, and Flora; then, she heard a music box playing inside Mr. and Mrs. Wingrave’s bedroom. She went inside and found the music box on the floor; it also served as a jewelry box. Dani went over and saw a photo inside.

[00:40:00] Meanwhile, Flora is still sitting in the attic, waiting for Dani to come and find her. While she continued humming the same sound from the music box, someone kept moving behind her getting noisier and noisier—she told her to keep quiet because she was hiding. Miles decided to startle Dani by hugging her. He tried to choke Dani and ran off. Dani had enough games for one night, so she chased Miles and called Flora. She thought Miles hid behind one of the curtains, but he wasn’t there when she checked. She saw a man outside the manor and thought he was an intruder, so she took an iron poker and went outside to confront the man. Miles, who was behind a window, told Dani, “I don’t feel so good.”

[00:43:00] Miles fainted and fell to the floor. Hannah came out to assist Dani. She told Hannah about the man she saw, so Hannah volunteered to call the police. Miles woke up, and Dani told him everything would be okay. Miles was staring at the window as he saw the same man Dani saw.
