After Life Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

Another day begins in the life of Tony. He watches one of Lisa’s videos again until Brandy, their dog, whines and asks for breakfast.

Postman Pat finally learns how to put letters into the letter hole. Daphne spends time by Julian’s old living quarters, and Kath gets ready for another day at work after downing a bottle of wine the previous night. Jill brings George to school, and Matt wakes up from sleeping in the office. Anne brings flowers to Stan’s grave, and Sandy leaves for work after giving packed lunches to her siblings. Brian heads out to deliver the Tambury Gazette, replacing Julian. Lenny kisses June goodbye before heading out.

Lenny goes straight to Tony’s and sees a bottle of wine in his living room. Tony quickly tells him that that was from last night and that was the last bottle in the house. He also tells Lenny that he has to get better. Lenny tells him that their interview today is with Tambury’s oldest woman, a 100-year-old woman who got a telegram from the Queen.

Tony tells Lenny that he’s feeling a bit low and that he’s feeling guilty for being sorry for himself because there are lots of people with lives worse than him. He tells him he wants to be more zen. Lenny asks about Emma, and Tony tells him they’re just friends because she thinks he’s not over Lisa yet. Lenny tells him not to let her wait forever.

They arrive at the shelter where the oldest woman in Tambury lives. They ask her about how she felt when she got the telegram, and she tells them that she felt like any other day. She also tells them that it’s awful living a long life like hers because it hurts to be alive.

Back at the office, Lenny comes to Matt’s office. He tells Matt that he knows he’s been sleeping in the office and can sleep in his flat because he has moved in with June. Matt tells him that he appreciates his offer. Lenny then asks Matt if he can bring June’s son to work in the office just for the experience and not for money, and matt gives him his permission.

After Lenny leaves, Kath comes to Matt’s office to tell him that she fancies him and that if he ever wants to meet up with her outside of work, she’s up for it. After Kath leaves, Matt calls Tony to his office.

Matt tells Tony that Kath just confessed that she likes him. Tony tells him not to worry about it because he’s not 13 anymore. Matt asks Tony how he’s doing, and he tells him that he’s trying to be more zen. Matt tells him that he should come with him to a meditation class he goes to every Tuesday after work. Tony refuses at first, but Matt convinces him to go.

Tony visits his dad and sees Emma. He tells her that Lenny told him not to let her wait forever. Tony’s dad calls him Joe, who is Tony’s uncle. Tony tells him that he’s not Joe because Joe’s dead. His dad tells him he’s Joe’s boy. Tony tells him he’s his boy. Tony’s dad asks him he is Joe.

Emma tells him that she didn’t say they would just be friends. She says that she told him he wasn’t over Lisa to push him to be ready. A man walks in, calls Emma babe, and winks. Emma tells Tony he’s the son of one of the new residents.

Tony talks to Anne in the graveyard and tells her that he always thinks like he’s going to do the wrong thing, so he doesn’t do anything – which is why he’s going to blow it with the nurse. Anne tells him that she’ll wait for him so he can focus on getting better. He tells her that he wants to help the people who have helped him, and as a favor, he’s going to a meditation class with his brother-in-law, whose marriage is on the rocks.

Matt talks to his therapist, who tells him that he shouldn’t worry about missing his wife so much. Matt tells him it’s like telling someone not to worry when they’re bleeding. He tells Matt that what he’s saying is that he should start doing stuff instead of worrying.

Pat knocks on Tony’s door, asking if he can use his bathroom. Tony lets him in and watches some videos of Lisa while passing the time waiting for the meditation session. When it was time, Tony stopped watching the video and checked in on Pat. He finds out that Pat has been enjoying a wash in his bathtub. He tells Pat to get out.

Upon arriving at the meditation class, the instructor welcomes tony by telling him that his mind is in every cell of his body. The instructor begins the class with some breathing exercises. Tony finds it annoying that they try to meditate when the instructor sniffs loudly and slurps his tea. He walks out pissed off.

Matt follows him and confronts him for what he did, but he tells him he can’t take it.

Tony goes home and watches another video of Lisa. He drinks wine and cries.

Our Thoughts

Grief is something we cannot explain, and while we thought Tony might be moving on with Emma – we find out that he is still not ready for a new relationship. We don’t blame him, though, and not starting anything without moving on first is a responsible thing to do. Salute, Tony! We hope he gets to become more zen.

We feel sad for Matt, though, but we think he and Jill will still be able to work things out between them. If they don’t work it out, Matt has Kath, who seems to be a good person. We’re happy that things seem to be going great for Lenny and June and that Brian seems to be doing well now that he has a job for the paper.
