Beastars Season 1 Episode 12 Recap - In the Storm's Wake

Instincts

Hal apologizes to Legoshi as she’s blocking his mouth with her arm. Prey animals also have their own instincts. She slowly removes her arm and apologizes. They had no idea they would react that way — like their bodies moved on their own.

She stays positive and decides to carry on, but the wolf refuses. Legoshi’s insecurities flood his mind. He was a fool: there are still many barriers between them.

Legoshi calms down and sleeps, comforted by the warmth of her hand. The next day, they walk home, and Hal sincerely thanks him for rescuing her.

Legoshi gets scolded by the dorm housemother that morning. She tells him she’d keep the incident a secret; telling the school about the Shishi-Gumi abduction proves too much for her. But what she’s concerned about the most is where they spent the night together.

New Rivals

Juno comes into the infirmary to check on Legoshi. She’s heard the news, so she offers her touch to make him feel better. He refuses; he already feels relaxed. Juno feels devastated.

She sees Hal outside the infirmary. Hal excuses herself, but Juno chases her. She confronts the rabbit, but Hal won’t back down. She is a senpai, after all. Juno admits she knew what happened, but Hal refutes her, saying their relationship isn’t simple.

Juno invades her space and sniffs her. She finds out nothing happened between them. As Juno leaves, she tells her she will win on her own as a girl.

The Dance

Backstage, at the festival, Legoshi finds out Rouis is missing. He thinks it has something to do with their fight earlier.

Juno appears in a red dress and costume. She volunteers to step up her performance in Rouis’ absence. Legoshi tells her good luck and leaves.

He heads out to find Hal, but she isn’t there. She’s back at the gardening booth, drained by the previous events.

The drama club performance starts, and Juno’s performance enchants everyone. Hal watches her, jealous at how strong and special she looks. Juno doesn’t fear being eaten by Legoshi. Hal is afraid, but she can’t forget Legoshi, who made her feel like herself again.

Lighting Ceremony

They meet each other inside the crowd. The wolf crouches down, about to say something, when Juno takes the mic. The spotlight shines on them as she introduces Legoshi and tells them of his efforts to save a poor herbivore. Everyone looks at them. Hal takes a step back; Legoshishi is called up to the stage, terrified. Juno takes his hand and raises it. She frames the wolf’s act as compassion inherent within carnivores: protect herbivores.

Legoshi disagrees inside. After what he’s seen, he doesn’t believe it. But Juno’s words are strong, and everyone gives them a round of applause. Juno then drags him to the lighting ceremony.

She tells him not to hide the strength of carnivores. She offers him another path, so he won’t need to hide anymore.

A Promise

A defeated Hal walks alone in the streets, jealous of what she saw. Legoshi finds her. Hal scolds the wolf, saying he and Juno are perfect together. But Legoshi argues Juno and him are very different.

He tells Hal she is now part of his worries. Hal rants about their differences. He admits that he felt like his prey was taken away when the Shishi-Gumi took her. But that wasn’t right. He saved her because he loves her. In the end, he promises to be stronger — to fight society and his own instincts, so they can both be happy.

Our Thoughts

All in all, this is an above-average anime tackling a subject others shy away from. We’ve only resolved the romantic side this season; there’s still the matter between Rouis and the Black Market to look forward to. I rate this episode 4/5.
