BONES Review: Accomplishing the Impossible Sleepy Hollow Crossover

By Olga Kijāna

This week’s episode of Bones was both a trick and a treat, as Booth and Brennan were paired up with an FBI Agent Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane, an 18th century British Army soldier, in a two-part Halloween crossover event with Sleepy Hollow.

Hailing from the world of the supernatural, Abbie and Ichabod challenged Brennan and Booth’s universe where scientific evidence is used to solve crimes in which humans do terrible things to other humans, which added much eccentricity to the investigation!

How did Abbie and Ichabod’s perspective challenge the team’s beliefs? Does collaboration between opposites produce better results, or perhaps there are more similarities between Booth and Brennan, and Abbie and Ichabod than they’d care to admit? And what are the consequences of raising someone from the dead?

This time, we were in for a very special Halloween ride.

Stranger Things Have Happened

The Halloween spirit was ever-present at the Jeffersonian in Bones’ “The Resurrection in the Remains.” Brennan expertly pranked Booth into thinking the edible ‘brain’ she had made for their daughter’s school party was the real deal after he couldn’t resist grabbing a bite. Thank goodness it was just a prank – I think it’s safe to say Booth wasn’t the only one flinching! Plotting his revenge all day, Booth eventually got her back by posing as Howe’s remains and jumping up at her from the gurney. Admittedly, we saw it coming, but it was endearing nonetheless, and it sparked an amusing discussion between the two on whether Brennan was scared or just ‘surprised’ based on her neural response. They wouldn’t be Booth and Brennan without a little bickering, that’s for sure.

Perusing the Jeffersonian archives, Ichabod came up with a document in which George Washington commanded for William Howe’s remains to be transported back to the Jeffersonian. Convenient, to say the least! Skeptical about the authenticity of the document, Brennan asked Angela to analyze it, and Angela came up with a puzzling conclusion – not only was the document genuine, but the handwriting of the person George Washington dictated the document to matched Ichabod’s. This really pushed Brennan’s beliefs, since surely there was no way he could be over 200 years old. Ichabod put forward the excuse that the document was written by his ancestor who was also his namesake, and while she had no further reasons not to release the General’s bones to the Sleepy Hollow detectives, Brennan could swear that there is no scientific evidence that people share handwriting tells with their ancestors.

Meanwhile, Angela put forward the suggestion to Hodgins that Ichabod and Abbie reminded her of another couple – and it triggered a debate – are they the “Booth and Brennan” or the “Hodgins and Angela” of Sleepy Hollow? Or perhaps they are a reflection of all great partnerships in which opposites not only attract, but also bring out the best in each other? According to Brennan, Ichabod Crane’s ‘grander mysteries of the universe’ – faith, art, love – result from our fear of death, ability to discern an attractive mate and need to procreate. However, as much as we laughed at Crane’s utter embarrassment at Brennan’s blunt remark that indeed, ‘procreation plays a significant part’ in her and Booth’s relationship, we couldn’t help agreeing with Ichabod that the way Booth and Brennan look at each other is beyond all scientific explanation… and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Bones continues (without Crane and Mills) Thursdays on FOX.
