What Ever Happened To Girlboss Season 2?

It’s quite a mystery of whatever happened to the web comedy series “Girlboss.” It definitely lived up to its comedy genre, it had an interesting splash of cast members, and it was a mid-budget 29-minute episode. Given that Rotten Tomatoes rated this at a critical 32%, it still received positive reactions from the general audience for its wit and comedy. So the question remains: Whatever happened to “Girlboss” Season 2?

The fashion-femme series was the very first ongoing Comedy series to ever get canceled in the 15 comedies Netflix aired since 2015. Surprisingly, it seemed as if creator and executive producer Kay Cannon didn’t see this coming. In fact, she was even making comments on upcoming plans for the second season. Instead, it abruptly halted into total oblivion.

Why doesn’t Girlboss have a second season?

Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said at PGA’s Produced By Conference that there is a financial factor in play here. He says, “When I say that, a big expensive show for a huge audience is great. A big, expensive show for a tiny audience is hard to even in our model to make that work very long.” Apparently, Netflix is killing a few series off for budget reasons, and among those is “Girlboss.”

The reasons stem from the original Sophia– the author of the book herself. Ever since the publicity of the series “Girlboss,” author Sophia Amoruso shed light on her personal life as well. Here, her ‘transgressions’ reached the news outlets. Apparently, she has been charged for her questionable work ethic. Former employees had filed complaints about being fired for the reasons of pregnancy and occasional illnesses.

Unfortunately for the series, it made an impact on the audience’s emotional attachment to the character. There have been comments about how the real origin story made the series difficult to stomach, knowing how it went downhill.

Meanwhile, on the actual series, most reviews were particular with the apparent protagonist. Some critics have deducted that as hard as the story pushes the character Sophia as a strong, independent feminist– she wasn’t too far from leaning into the negative range.

Reviews have mentioned that fictional Sophia’s personality was, in plain terms: bad. In a nutshell, most reviews mention how the so-called “Independence” is in fact “Stubbornness,” and “Quirky” is “Immature.”

To Kay Cannon’s defense, she reiterates the character’s imperfection. That when all hell’s loose, we grab on to human emotions that will protect us from falling into the pit: selfishness and greed. That’s who fictional Sophia is, apparently. But the reviews continue to comment otherwise, saying that “flawed” is far from “deplorable.”

Girlboss should’ve been aired with more strategic timing

When Netflix announced their adoption of Sophia Amoruso’s novel “Girlboss,” it was during the successful reign in her business. That was in February 2016. But the following months after that, it underwent bankruptcy until the apparent Internet-Money-making sensation resigned as CEO and sold her website “NastyGal” to Boohoo.com.

The following year, “Girlboss” was to premiere.

Unfortunately for executive producer Kay Cannon, the cast and the crew, there was a strong confusion in the message. The audience is unsure whether or not they should be rooting for her, or questioning her. And before they could even make the distinction, the budget didn’t cut for the second season. Whether or not there was an issue with how it was portrayed or the story itself was questionable, there still isn’t a second season. And we may assume there isn’t going to be one anytime soon.
