Ewan McGregor in Talks to Reprise Obi-Wan Kenobi for Untitled 'Star Wars' Disney+ Series

Hello there. At long last, devoted Obi-Wan Kenobi and r/PrequelMemes fans finally have the high ground. Ewan McGregor is set to pick up his blue lightsaber again as he is in active talks to reprise the role of Jedi Master Kenobi for an upcoming Star Wars series on Disney+ (via Deadline).

The news comes after rumors began circulating that the Scottish actor will indeed re-don Obi-Wan’s cloak. Details on the upcoming project are kept under wraps.

McGregor rose to Star Wars fame after playing the Jedi Master in the franchise’s prequel trilogy—The Phantom Menace, The Attack of the Clones, and The Revenge of the Sith. The actor’s Obi-Wan portrayal is also regarded as one of the best character adaptations that the prequels introduced, gaining massive fan and critical acclaim. McGregor as Obi-Wan continues to be a revered tentpole in the Star Wars canon, gaining a following that encompasses all generations.

Obi-Wan: The Star Wars Series Can Explore His Life in the Canon and EU Novels

There are a plethora of possible storylines for the Obi-Wan series, given the materials both in the new Star Wars canon and expanded universe. For one, the character already has an established backstory in the “Star Wars: Jedi Apprentice” series. For two, his exploits in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars saga deserve its own spotlight as well.

Sir Alec Guinness first introduced Obi-Wan Kenobi to the Star Wars universe in A New Hope. He was instrumental in training Luke Skywalker with the ways of the Force, even guiding the young Jedi throughout his ordeals in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as a Force ghost. Obi-Wan “died” at the hands of Darth Vader in a duel at the Death Star’s hangar in A New Hope.

Aside from the upcoming Obi-Wan series, McGregor will be seen in Doctor Sleep, the sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining by Stephen King. He is set to play the grown-up version of Danny Torrance, the once-innocent child endowed with powers of the Shining. McGregor is also in production for Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn as the movie’s villain, Gotham City gangster and formidable Batman foe Black Mask.

The untitled Obi-Wan series joins two previously-announced Star Wars shows on Disney+—Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and the Rogue One spinoff series centered on the adventures of Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor.

Disney+ will launch on November 12, 2019.
