Familiar Wife Season 1 Episode 9 Recap

Hye-won goes back inside the house and confronts Ju-Hyeok. Ju-Hyeok finally tells the truth about Wu-jin’s mom: he had to help Wu-jin look for her. He tells Hye-won that nothing is going on between them and that whatever is happening inside her head is not true. “Yes, it is my fault that I lied to you. I’m to blame for that,” he says. Hye-won gets angry at Wu-jin for spending an entire night with her superior even though he’s married. “How could you stick up for her? I can’t even look at you,” says Hye-won. She leaves the house still angry with her husband, but because she doesn’t have any friends to talk to, she calls Hyeon-Su and asks him to spend time with her. Hyeon-Su keeps guessing why Hye-won suddenly wants to drink with him, but Hye-won refuses to tell him. After a whole night of drinking, she comes home to find Ju-Hyeok already sleeping on the couch. She remembers the website Ju-Hyeok mentioned before: “Behind.” Ju-Hyeok had told her that Behind is an app for office workers that acts as a secret community. People who use the app sometimes post about their superiors or post stories about affairs. Even though she’s drunk, Hye-won creates an account on Behind and rants about a certain employee.

Wu-jin goes to the office the next day at work using her new car. Jong-hu even teases her if she really has a driver’s license because it seems like she doesn’t know what she is doing. Wu-jin confesses it’s her first time driving after she got her license 10 years ago. Not long after they arrive at the office, their team leader shows them a post she read online. An anonymous post on Behind mentions Wu-jin’s name and where she works. It says that Wu-jin seduces men, married or not, in her workplace; the same reason she had to transfer from HQ. When Hye-won wakes up, she remembers what she did and rechecks the website. She gets worried a bit, but then she tells herself she’s not lying.

Ju-Hyeok calls Hye-won to ask her if she knows anything about the post. “How could I write anything? I don’t even know how to use it. Do you see me as a cheap person who writes trash on those websites?” Hye-won says. Ju-Hyeok apologizes and then tells Hye-won he’ll come home early. The post is gaining attention real quick, but Wu-jin remains unbothered. She says she doesn’t care because the post is not true. The branch manager tells Wu-jin that HQ doesn’t believe it’s only a rumor. “They don’t care whether you are trustworthy or not. They only care about their reputation, whatever the truth is,” the branch manager says. Wu-jin plans to ignore the post until the gossip dies, but somebody posts a group photo of the employees. Even though Wu-jin is not in the photo, she still gets furious.

Hyeon-Su picks up all the clothes he likes. When it’s time for them to pay, he says he left his card. Hye-won smiles at him and says she’ll take care of it. Hyeon-Su tells Hye-won they should eat, but he immediately reminds Hye-won he doesn’t have his card. Hye-won says she’ll take care of it, then she takes her phone and calls Ju-Hyeok. Ju-Hyeok says they are at the police station because their company takes the post seriously, so Wu-jin has decided to take action. Hye-won panics as soon as she hears it and ends the call. She tries logging in to her account on Behind, but she can’t. Hyeon-Su grabs the phone from Hye-won and says he’ll fix it. When it’s still not working, they run to the nearest internet cafè. They are running out of time because the police are already investigating, so as soon as they access the website, they delete the post. Hye-won looks so relieved.

At the police station, Jong-hu checks the website once more and finds that the post is already deleted. He, Ju-Hyeok, and Wu-jin just decide to leave. Later that night, Wu-jin receives a call from an investigator saying they have already found out who did it. Upon hearing Hye-won’s name, Wu-jin’s expression changes, but she says her only concern is that the post is deleted. It’s already removed from the site, so she says she will drop all the charges.

When Ju-Hyeok arrives home, he tells Hye-won that things went well at the police station after the post was removed. Just before he goes to sleep, he checks the computer for some work-related documents. He sees that Hye-won visited Behind, so he calls the police to ask about the investigation results. The detective says they can’t say anything to other people; all information is only shared with the complainant. But when Ju-Hyeok gets the confirmation that it’s from their address, he‘s sure Hye-won did it. The following day at work, Ju-Hyeok apologizes to Wu-jin and thanks her.

Ju-Hyeok receives a call from Ju-Eun that their mother is in the hospital. Their mother doesn’t want Ju-Hyeok to worry, but she is still waiting for him to visit. Ju-Hyeok asks Hye-won to pay a quick visit to the hospital, but after just a few minutes of talking to Ju-Hyeok’s mother, Hye-won says she has an appointment to attend to. She puts on the bed an envelope with money inside. Ju-Hyeok argues with Hye-won afterward. He wants to take his mom home so he can take care of her, but Hye-won says she’ll feel uncomfortable. Hye-won reminds Ju-Hyeok that they must attend her father’s book party the next day, but since Ju-Hyeok is worried about his mother, he wants to be there for her.

Because her mother has trouble sleeping and is always irritated, Wu-jin brings her to the hospital. The doctor says they need to stay for one night for observation. While Wu-jin fixes their things, she notices that her mother is missing again. She follows the sound of her voice and sees her mother talking to an old couple. She tells her mother to go back to the room and not bother other people, but her mother wants to stay and play with the others. When Ju-Hyeok walks into the room, Wu-jin gets so surprised. Her mother immediately hugs Ju-Hyeok and calls him her son-in-law. Ju-Hyeok’s mother plays cards with Wu-jin and her mother. She tells Ju-Hyeok later that she feels sorry for the mother but her daughter, Wu-jin, is so kind. At night, Wu-jin and Ju-Hyeok can’t sleep, so they watch TV in the waiting room with other visitors. When the show is over and the other visitors leave the room, Ju-Hyeok and Wu-jin stay in their seats. The tip of their hands barely touches, but none of them moves away.

Our Thoughts

We have one stand on this: Ju-Hyeok is married in his present life, and it’s not to Wu-jin. When someone touches another person, and it’s not intentional, they usually flinch and move their hand away. But neither Ju-Hyeok nor Wu-jin made a move — not good. Ju-Hyeok is the reason why Hye-won made the post in the first place. Not only did he lie, but he also kept on defending Wu-jin instead of taking his wife’s side. It’s understandable why Hye-won got angry. But posting about Wu-jin was a bit too much. She mentioned Wu-jin’s full name in the post and even wrote down where Wu-jin works.

Whatever they do, it seems fate keeps working to ensure they stay connected. Now, Wu-jin got to meet Ju-Hyeok’s parents as well. Because his mother likes Wu-jin, we think Ju-Hyeok realizes even more how cold Hye-won is towards her in-laws. Hye-won doesn’t have to care if she doesn’t want to, but she can at least pretend. The thing about Hye-won is she doesn’t want to compromise. She wants what she wants. She can’t even understand that Ju-Hyeok’s mother is sick and thinks her father’s book party is more important.
