One of Us Is Lying Season 1 Episode 4 Recap - One of Us Is Famous

Flashback: Nate pulls Simon under the stairs and confronts him for posting about him being a drug dealer. Simon urges Nate to name his customers because they probably pretend to be so pure and clean, so they should be exposed. Nate tells him that if he gives him names, he won’t have any customers to sell to. Simon tries to bribe him, but Nate refuses to give and even insults him by saying his post was a great advertisement — he got a ton of new customers. “I don’t think advertising being a criminal works out well for anyone in the end,” Simon says. Nate gives him the middle finger and leaves.

At present, Nate is in bed when he gets lots of messages from his friends about being singled out as a murder suspect because of his criminal record.

At their house, Ann tells Addy to grab the opportunity of being named the beauty of the group, given the case is now part of the national news. Addy finds it annoying and tells her mom to go without her because she can find another ride. She ends up riding a kiddie bike to school. Seeing Addy struggling with the bike lock, Janae helps her and secures her bike to the rack.

Addy sees Detective Wheeler talking to Jake. Cooper and Keely pass her by, and she catches up with them. Keely tells them they shouldn’t worry because the police are focused on Nate.

Detective Wheeler tells Nate they will find out if the post about him is true. If found true, she says it is not only a motive to kill Simon but also his third strike in drug offenses. She warns him if they find out Nate is dealing drugs while on probation, he will be in jail soon.

Principal Gupta asks Bronwyn about the rumor; Bronwyn denies it. The principal tells her there will be an investigation by the disciplinary committee. She promises it will be discreet, and if Bronwyn is innocent, the investigation won’t affect her college applications.

Bronwyn and Evan go on a date by the sea. Evan tries to distract Bronwyn from all the issues and asks her to go with him to a concert the following night.

Cooper leaves a voicemail for Kris, asking him for a chance to explain. Kris texts him and tells him to stop. Cooper goes home, and his father tells him he tested positive for painkillers. Cooper explains it was a one-time thing for the showcase. His father tells him he said the painkillers were from a doctor back in Mississippi, but he warns Cooper that the last thing they need is for the media to look at his past. Cooper receives a text message from Bronwyn saying Wheeler is talking to everyone, so they need to meet.

The Bayview Four meet at the cinema. Brownyn tells them they need to give the media a new suspect so they will be off their backs. Addy tells her she can talk to Janae and get gossip out of her. Bronwyn instructs her to record their conversation so they’ll have something to leak to the press.

Back at their house, Maeve asks Bronwyn where she went. When she refuses to tell, Maeve tells her she found a draft in AboutThat, and she’s not going to tell either. Bronwyn gives up and tells her she was with Nate, Addy, and Cooper. Maeve then shows her Simon’s laptop and says whoever is posting in AboutThat changed Cooper’s secret, and she thinks it is Cooper.

Bronwyn tells Nate about what she discovered. She thinks no one would do it other than Cooper. Nate tells her it depends on the secret and asks her what it is. Bronwyn asks him to promise not to tell anyone before revealing the original post saying Cooper is gay. Nate says it’s unexpected. She says she couldn’t sleep because Maeve thinks they should give the laptop to the police, but she thinks if Cooper isn’t the one who changed the post, then she’ll have outed him for no reason. Nate tells her he watches horror movies whenever he cannot stop thinking about something. They watch a movie simultaneously.

Cooper arrives home after his morning jog and sees police in his house.

Nate is on his way to class when a reporter asks his comment about Simon’s post about him selling drugs to someone who OD’d. Flashback: Nate is at a party when Janae asks him for some pills. He doesn’t want to sell to her, seeing she’s drunk. Janae hands him a wad of cash and tells him to keep the change. Nate gives her a packet. Back to the present, he tells the reporter no comment while Vanessa records the interaction. The reporter then asks, “What led you to sell drugs in the first place? Was it your father’s PTSD or what happened with your mother?” Nate gets fed up and hits the hand of the reporter, causing the mic to drop. Vanessa makes it to a meme and gets 50k views.

Addy approaches Janae’s table and asks her if she can sit with her because it is embarrassing to sit alone. A student passes their table and calls them freaks. Addy excuses herself and tells Janae they should hang out later.

While discreetly talking in the guise of getting things from their lockers, Bronwyn tells Nate she saw Vanessa’s TikTok, and Cooper was not at school that morning. She heard cops came to his house. Nate tells her the cops are talking to everyone, and it might not mean anything. She tells him they don’t know anything about him, and Maeve is making a fake IG account to see if she can talk to anyone who knew Cooper from Mississippi.

Addy goes into a diner with Janae. When she orders the same thing as Janae, she explains she hates ordering. She says when she and Jake were still together, Jake does the ordering for them. Janae tells her Jake might be a little controlling, but Addy says he is a really great guy once you get to know him. She takes out her phone and starts recording the conversation in secret. Addy asks Janae about Simon, hoping to get her to say she’s into him. Janae says he was the coolest. He created AboutThat to expose hypocrites and encourage everyone to be more realistic. Addy tries to get Janae’s sympathy by saying they both lost the men they were in love with. But Janae gets upset and tells her she’s not in love with Simon because she’s gay. She also says Addy and her do not have anything in common because Addy was dumped while her best friend got murdered. She leaves.

Maeve shows Bronwyn her conversation with Travis, a guy who used to play baseball with Cooper back in Mississippi, as she pretends to be Maya Starr. Travis refuses to talk anything about what happened back there and tells Maeve he knows she is not who she says she is, and she should stop digging around about Cooper. Bronwyn receives a text from Cooper asking to meet. Maeve says she should not go because Cooper might actually be the murderer and reminds her she has a date with Evan.

Bronwyn talks to Nate as she watches yet another horror movie. When the scene gets too intense, she closes the laptop. Nate asks her if she wants to come over so they can watch the movie together. She asks Nate if they shouldn’t skip the meeting with Cooper. He tells her there is usually more to a story than meets the eye, so they should hear what he has to say. Flashback: Nate was making out with a girl at the same party where Janae asked her for the drugs. He opened the bedroom door and saw another couple making out, so he went and opened the bathroom door instead. He saw Janae passed out on the bathroom floor. He looked into her bag and saw she downed almost all of the pills he sold her. He called 911 and made Janae throw up while waiting for the ambulance. Back to the present, Nate tells Bronwyn to trust him. He makes a deal with her: if they still think Cooper did it after the meeting, they will go to the cops.

At the cinema, Cooper confronts Bronwyn and tells her he knows she is Maya Starr. He says he thought they were working together. Bronwyn explains he heard his drug test was negative, and she thought it was weird that his secret was the only fake one, and she heard the police were at his house. Cooper tells her why the police were at their house that morning: his father had a heart attack. He admits to being gay and says he is a coward for not coming out. He mentions the only person he wants to talk to about being gay isn’t speaking to him. From a distance, someone takes a photo of them.

Addy tells Nate that Keely and Cooper are such good liars while getting ice cream the next day at school. She asks Nate if he thinks Cooper has a boyfriend. Nate texts Kris: “I need to talk to you about a friend…” Evan and Bronwyn sit together. Evan points out that seeing Nate and Addy together looks suspicious. A new post goes live in AboutThat. It’s their picture from the previous night with the caption: “Your four favorite murder suspects held a secret meeting last night. The only question is: Are they trying to cover up what they did to Simon? Or are they choosing their next victim?”

Evan confronts Bronwyn and asks her why she lied about being sick the previous night. She tells him she had to talk to them because she thought she knew who did it. Evan calls her out for trusting them more than him or the police. He asks her to explain, but she says she cannot. She says she isn’t the same girl Evan met during the summer, and she trusted them before him because they’re the only ones who know what she’s going through. She breaks up with him.

That night, the police search the Bayview Four’s houses simultaneously. They find nothing. In Addy’s house, her mom flirts with the police officer to get on his good side. She tells Addy to take notes because that’s how to treat the police if she wants them on her side. She says Addy is beautiful and sweet, and that’s how people want to see her. She says Addy should start embracing being the blonde beauty, and if she does it right, she can become an influencer. Addy gets disgusted and walks away.

Cooper asks Lucas not to tell their dad about what just happened because he needs to recover. Lucas asks Cooper if he’s okay just as Cooper gets a message from Kris: “You okay? My shrooms guy said you might need a friend.” He smiles and tells Lucas he’s going to be fine.

Addy goes to the salon and asks for a short hairdo.

Bronwyn asks Maeve to give her the laptop, but Maeve says she’ll only give it up if she promises to give it to the cops. Nate knocks on the window. Bronwyn lets him in. He hands the laptop over to Bronwyn and says he found it on the roof. Maeve says she had to think fast when the police came. Bronwyn and Nate tell Maeve they are going to destroy the laptop. Maeve disagrees, but Nate convinces her. Bronwyn and Nate go to a cliff’s edge to destroy the laptop. Before Nate throws it out, he gets a flashback of the morning of Simon’s murder. Simon approaches him while he tries to open his jammed locker. Simon blames him for what happened to Janae. Nate tells him he doesn’t care whatever he writes about him. But Simon says he will find someone who cares, a girlfriend, or maybe a parent, and then use it to destroy him. Back to the present, Nate throws the laptop into the water. He thanks Bronwyn for trusting him. They were about to kiss when a motorcycle passed past them and almost fell off the cliff.

Back at their house, Maeve mails Simon’s hard drive to the Bayview Police Department.

Nate brings Bronwyn to his house and warns her his place is messy. They go in. Nate gets surprised when he sees his mother.

Our Thoughts

Wait, what? We thought Nate said his mother died. So, that was a lie? Well, what else is true about the Bayview Four? They’re proving to have more and more secrets than what Simon has revealed. Speaking of secrets, what does Maeve really want? We mean, we get that she wants to help Bronwyn, but by how she’s acting so far, we won’t be surprised if she has another agenda. Also, what do you think Addy will look like after her haircut? It takes guts to sport a short ‘do, but at this point, we think nothing Addy has more than just beauty and guts, so we know she’ll be able to pull it off. Lastly, can we mention how annoying Vanessa is? Ugh, it seems like she has nothing going on in her life that if nothing happens at school, she’ll die out of boredom.
