'One Strange Rock' Gets a Nod for Season 2 on National Geographic

National Geographic announced the renewal of One Strange Rock on Wednesday afternoon. The network used its time at the Television Critics Association’s Press Tour to express the show’s new season. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, One Strange Earth explores Earth and what makes it interesting in the universe. Actor Will Smith hosted its first season which aired in March of this year.

Meanwhile, Aronofsky executive produces the series with his Protozoa Pictures partners Ari Handel and Scott Franklin. Aronofsky’s notable works include cult classic Requiem for a Dream starring Jared Leto, Black Swan starring Natalie Portman, and Mother! Portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence. The three team up with National Geographic producers Jane Root and Peter Lovering’s Nutopia for the series. One Strange Earth will show its audience how Earth sustains life while dealing with other factors to keep it thriving.

According to Hollywood Reporter, National Geographic Global Network CEO Courteney Monroe said that the series is a big hit because of its storytelling and creative team. It “stretches” the traditional boundaries of Science while taking its audience on a “breathtaking” visual experience.

Aronofsky adds that he took this ambitious opportunity because he has the luxury of working with National Geographic and Jane of Nutopia. He states that he has a lot more to offer for the first season but just couldn’t make it. With the show’s renewal, Aronofsky now has a chance to include everything he missed for the first season.

“There is just so much to tell,” says Root. “To be able to continue the epic story of One Strange Rock is incredibly thrilling. We set out to make Science and the world to be relevant to the viewers, and with the creative talents of Darren [Aronofsky] and his team, we did just that – in this epic and visually stunning journey.”

According to National Geographic, 81 million people have watched at least the last part of One Strange Rock, making it one of the channel’s most-viewed series. One Strange Rock replays Sunday nights on FOX. Season two starts filming in February.
