Record of Ragnarok Season 1 Episode 9 Recap - Tyrant of the Ocean

Next Bout

Hrist explains to Göll that Valkyries made into weapons via Völundr will fuse them with the fighter. If the human dies, so shall they. They have to prepare themselves for this fate.

Sasaki Kojiro comes in and volunteers to be the next fighter. He’s an old man; how could he possibly be the real thing?

Kojiro explains he’s been honing his skill even after his death. He considers this his golden age. Hrist agrees to join him in this bout against Poseidon.

God of the Sea

The arena transforms. There is now a circular platform at the center, surrounded by water. Heimdall announces the next god. Poseidon comes in through the gates, sucking all the seawater back to the entrance. The sea makes way for its ruler as he makes a grand entrance. He is hailed as one of the most feared gods—the “Zeus of the Ocean.”

The crowd is in awe, wet from the splashing water. Poseidon wields a grand trident. The humans notice even the gods are afraid of him.

Greatest Loser

Next to come in is the human fighter. Heimdall calls him one of the greatest swordsmen in the world. He lost to Musashi, but he evolved step by step to become the best even in defeat.

He is the greatest loser in history: Sasaki Kojiro. The humans are unimpressed. They say Musashi should be the one to fight. Musashi looks ahead quietly.

Kojiro unsheathes his sword, making the waves calm down. Musashi slices up the book of the five rings and weeps. He sees Kojiro achieve the title of Number One Under the Sun.

Slow Start

The fight starts with both fighters standing still. Kojiro calculates each attack scenario in his head, but he can’t find a good opening without getting beat. Sweat drips from his sword as he deliberates.

In his mind, Poseidon had killed him 18 times. The crowd worries. Is there even a way for him to strike?

The Rebel

Brünnhilde explains to Göll there were once 13 gods. It was Poseidon who killed one of them. His name was Adamas, the older brother of Zeus and Poseidon.

In time immemorial, after Zeus overthrew the Titans, there was turmoil over the hierarchy of the gods. Adamas, the second eldest, rebelled and freed the demons from Tartarus. They marched to form an army to overthrow Zeus.

He asked Poseidon to join the rebellion, but the sea god refused. Adamas lashes out in a fury. Poseidon told him gods don’t form armies. They are perfect beings, and Adamas defied all those rules.

Poseidon stood and whistled a tune. Adamas attacked him, but Poseidon just looked him in the eye and stabbed him clean. He left Adamas’ severed body scattered on the floor. That day they rewrote history, so only 12 gods are considered original gods.

Godliest

Hermes was part of the rebellion. Ares accuses him of being a traitor, but it is revealed that Zeus favored the war. It was only by Poseidon’s act that a conflict didn’t happen. Ares can’t believe that Adamas died in a single strike. Poseidon simply said Adamas didn’t exist, and it became so without objection.

That’s what makes him terrifying. That’s why he is more godlike than the rest of them.

Back at the arena, the fighters remain still. Kojiro is bothered his enemy won’t even look at him. He puts down his sword and squats on the floor, saying he doesn’t want to die.

Our Thoughts

It’s just a simple introduction episode, not much going on. I mean, both fighters are standing still. I rate this a 3 out of 5.
