THE X-FILES Finale Review: This is the End

By Pauline Perenack

This is the End

Can you believe we’re already at the end of The X-Files mini-series? It feels like just yesterday we were eagerly anticipating the pilot episode. But just as quickly as it arrived, we now find ourselves at the mini-series finale, and it’s been a rollercoaster ride thus far. We’ve had some classic Monster of the Week episodes, we’ve had some scares, we’ve had some thrills, and we’ve had some laughs. Reactions have been mixed, but the ratings have been sky-high, once again proving the brand value of nostalgia. But, how did we get here?

Last week’s episode introduced us to a pair of special agents who could have been Mulder and Scully 20 years ago. It also took us deeper down the path of understanding the feelings of guilt Scully has endured over giving up her and Mulder’s son, William, for adoption.

Tonight’s episode, “My Struggle II” forms a bookend to the pilot of this mini-series, but with the added bonus of our characters living through various cases between the two episodes. However, tonight we were able to see the direct effects of their dealings with Internet host Tad O’Malley.

Let’s recap what happened.

Beam Me Up

Wow. In the words of many X-Philes out there on Twitter, how could the show end this way? But, before we discuss the ending, let’s discuss the hour leading up to it. Starting the finale episode in a similar fashion to the pilot was brilliant. Ultimately, Scully’s morphing turned out to be semi-true in that she does possess alien DNA – which in a turn of events, was the only thing which could save humanity, not harm it.

The episode as a whole was fantastic, but it felt like it was in overdrive for the entire hour – exhausting live tweeters across the globe. We finally got to meet up with Agent Reyes, who has not done well since we last saw her. In fact, she found herself wrapped up with the Cigarette Smoking Man. While her storyline seemed to make sense, it also felt forced – as though Annabeth Gish had signed up for the series at the last minute, and Chris Carter needed some way to shove her character into a storyline he had already built. It was good to see her though, even if she had flipped teams.

But in the end, it came down to Scully saving the world. Her being immortal finally rang true, as it was her DNA which could defeat the Spartan virus. However, we were left not knowing if she was actually able to save everyone. Instead, we were left with an alien UFO, beaming its light down on her on a busy bridge. Was she taken? Did they deliver her William, whose stem cells were desperately needed by Mulder to survive?

Chris Carter promised us a massive cliffhanger, and boy, did we get it. The question now is, if The X-Files continues, will it be with Mulder and Scully? Or will The Powers That Be try to continue the X-Files investigations with Miller and Einstein? Based on that ending, I personally would assume the latter, but, the truth is, as they say, out there.
