Virgin River Season 1 Episode 10 Recap - Unexpected Endings

Mel and Charmaine are at a restaurant talking about the pregnancy. Charmaine asks Jack if she’s in it alone. Jack tells her he’ll support him and the baby, but Charmaine tells him she wants to know if he’ll ever feel the same way with her. Jack tells her he needs time to process things, and before Charmaine leaves, she tells him that she still loves him.

On his way to Mel’s, Hope stops him in the middle of the road to ask if he talked to Charmaine. He says she should not have read that letter and that he’s on his way to tell Mel about the baby.

While preparing pancakes, Joey calls Mel and tells her that Bill wants her dog. She also tells her that they cannot work it out because he’s dating his assistant. Mel tells her that she went out on a date with Jack and really likes him. Upon hearing this, Joey tears up. Jack comes knocking, so Mel has to hang up.

Jack walks in, and Mel asks him about his preference for chocolate chips for the pancakes, but Jack tells him he couldn’t have pancakes because he had to be in Grace Valley to pick up an order since his delivery guy’s truck broke down. He tells her he’ll see her later that night after closing the bar.

Hope comes into Doc’s clinic and fills him in with a dose of town gossip. She tells him that Connie has to take care of a teenage niece and that she saw Jack on his way to tell Mel about the baby. Doc, not knowing about the baby yet, was flustered. Hope tells him that Charmaine is pregnant with Jack’s baby. He reminds her to stay out of Jack’s business again. Doc invites Hope to dinner at Arthur’s later that night.

Mel heads to Doc’s clinic and sees her name on the door with makeshift signage. This makes her smile. She sees Hope drinking coffee and pours it down the drain because she’s not supposed to drink coffee until her next stress test. Hope, thinking that Jack has already told her about the baby, gives Mel a reassuring hug while telling her that the baby will not change anything between Jack and her. Mel tells her she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. It was too late for Hope not to tell her, so she told her about the pregnancy. Mel seemed upset, and she walked away to tend to a patient right after. Hope leaves so she can tell Jack what she did.

Paige comes into the bar to talk to Preacher, and she reveals that she doesn’t have a choice. Her husband was a cop, and he hurt her; one night, he went after Christopher. When she called the cops, she was the one who got arrested, and he told the judge she was unstable, causing him to have sole custody after the divorce. She couldn’t leave Christopher with him, so they ran. Preacher tells her that her secret is safe with him, but he tells Jack about it because he needs to talk to somebody.

Doc and Mel talk about the pregnancy and how it changes everything. Mel tells him she didn’t come there to start anything. Doc tells her that she should get feeling out in the open and that he thinks Jack and her can have a future together.

A non-local walks into the bar and looks pretty interested in the pies. He says that his mother and wife used to bake that kind of pie. Ricky tells him about Paige and her truck before Preacher interrupts them and asks for the man’s name. The man hurriedly left. Thinking that the man might be Paige’s ex-husband, Preacher follows him out and takes a photo of his plates.

Jack asks Preacher to tell Brady he needs help to unload the delivery. Preacher tells him that he’s late again. When they go in, Brady comes, and Jack confronts him for being late. Preacher didn’t like the way he spoke to Jack, so he pitches in, and before a fight happens, Jack pulls them apart. Brady is about to walk away when Jack tells him that he can never come back if he walks away. Brady walks away anyway. Preacher tells Jack that what happened in Mosul, Lonergan’s death is not his fault, just as Jack sees a flashback of Lonergan dying.

Jack goes to his office. Preacher follows him, and Jack tells him about Charmaine. He also tells him he needs to clear his head and goes outside. Hope finally finds Jack alone and tells him she messed up and told Mel. Jack gets mad and tells her she should stay out of his life.

Jack heads back inside just as Mel walks in. Mel tells Jack that there’s nothing to figure out because he’s having a baby with another woman and that they should stay friends. Jack says he cannot do that because it doesn’t change how he feels about her. Mel walks out disappointed.

Doc comes to Hope’s house to pick her up for dinner, but she tells him she doesn’t want to eat. She gets sentimental and tells Doc she’s sorry for not accepting his apology for the past 20 years, that now that she feels the same way with Jack, she finally gets it. Doc accepts her apology and tells her that Mel and Jack will figure it out. She worries about Mel leaving or Jack never talking to her again. Doc comforts her by saying that she should learn from what happened and stay out of other people’s business. He comforts her with newly drawn, executed, and fully paid divorce papers. However, Doc tells her that whether they are divorced or married, Doc isn’t going anywhere. Hope breaks into tears.

On her way back to Virgin River from visiting Lilly and Chloe, Mel stops by a cafe at Clear River. There, she bumps into Charmaine. She congratulates her on the baby, and Charmaine tells her she thinks she cannot have Jack until Mel is around.

Brady meets with Calvin, who tells him that Virgin River is the only county where he has a logistic problem and that he thinks Brady can help with that.

As Mel drives home in the rain, she remembers how she argued with Mark about another round of IVF. Mark tells her to stop trying for a while, and Mel thinks they need a break from each other. Mel tells Mark they don’t want the same things anymore, and when Mark tells her he loves her, she says love isn’t enough, just as their car gets hit by another vehicle.

Back at Hope’s, Doc and Hope talk about what happened to them. It turns out that Rachel, Charmaine’s mother, was a close friend of hers. When Doc slept with her, she got so angry that she refused to visit her in the hospital when Rachel was sick and dying to make amends. Doc tells her he never stopped loving her. Hope tells him she feels the same, and they kiss.

Preacher comes into Paige’s house to check on her because she didn’t return his calls. When he got there, the door was open. Paige’s phone and wallet are on the table, but there’s no sign of her or Christopher. Upon further inspection, he sees a trail of fresh blood on the floor.

Mel arrives at her cabin. Seeing that Jack was waiting for her, she told him to leave. Jack stays and comes in. Jack tells her he’s sorry, and she tells him she was embarrassed to learn about the pregnancy from Hope. She further tells him that it’s not just about keeping the pregnancy from her. It’s also about her having a stillborn baby and knowing that she cannot have children of her own. Jack tells her he’s falling in love, and she tells him it’s too much for her to handle. Mel asks him for more time to think, and he tells her he’s not going anywhere.

After Jack left, Mel packed her bags and called Joey. She tells her she’s coming home.

Our Thoughts

Whew, this season finale is heartbreaking. Is Mel leaving Virgin River for good? Oh, poor Jack! We cannot blame Mel for leaving, though. She has been through a lot, and what Jack’s asking of her isn’t simple. After all, she came to Virgin River to start anew, away from all the stress of her former life, but with Jack, it seems like she has gotten herself into a more complicated mess.

On the other hand, we’re so happy that Doc and Hope look like they’re getting back together. We can’t help but worry about Paige as well. That blood trail sent shivers to our spine. There are certainly many things to look forward to in the next season!
