Virgin River Season 2 Episode 1 Recap - New Beginnings

Mel talks to Mark’s grave and tells him that she will never stop loving him and that no matter how hard she tries, she cannot forget about him.

At Virgin River, Doc spends the night at Hope’s, but Hope doesn’t want the town to know they are back together just yet.

Jack is at Charmaine’s, watching her throw up yet again. He asks her to get a second opinion from Doc. Jack’s phone vibrates, and Charmaine instantly thinks it’s Mel, so she asks about Mel. Jack tells her it’s Preacher, saying he’s slammed at the bar. Jack prepares to leave, and Charmaine asks about Mel again. Jack tells her he hasn’t spoken to her since she left. Charmaine tells him it’s crappy to leave someone without any explanation.

After a few weeks, Mel comes back to Virgin River and heads straight to Doc’s. The door opens after a while, and Mel thinks it’s Doc. She says she’s back and was surprised to see that it’s Jack. Mel apologizes for not returning his calls. Mel tries to explain that she needs some time to sort things out, but Jack changes his mind about hearing her out.

Doc opens his exam room. Charmaine is there, and they are all surprised to see Mel. Doc tells her he’s glad to have her back and advises Charmaine to go back the next day. Jack and Charmaine leave, and Mel voices out her frustration about the situation to Doc. She tells him she was just caught off-guard seeing them both there. Doc tells her that Charmaine fired her OB-GYN and hired him. Upon learning this, Mel tells him that she’ll be happy to do house calls the next time Charmaine comes in so they won’t see each other.

At Paige’s bakery truck, Preacher picks up some orders. Preacher offers to help Christopher with his math subject, and Paige tells him she still feels sorry about the night Christopher cut his hand. The blood trail Preacher saw at Paige’s house was from that. Preacher tells her they never finished talking about Michelle, and Paige tells him they can continue talking at lunchtime the day after next.

While driving Charmaine back to Clear River, Jack notices that she’s awfully quiet, so he asks her if she is sick again. She was mad because Mel was at Virgin River despite Jack telling her that she had left. Charmaine isn’t convinced that Jack just saw Mel again at Doc’s earlier that day and that he didn’t know she was back. She asks him if he’s happy that Mel’s back, but Jack refuses to answer.

Back at the bar, Connie tries to get information regarding Mel and Brady from Jack, but he refuses to talk to her. He sees Hope by the counter and just gives her a wry smile, and he has not forgiven her yet. Mel comes in, and Hope hugs her, telling her that Jack might lighten up once he sees her. Mel tries to talk to Jack, but he appears to be in the middle of something, so Mel leaves.

Muriel comes in and asks Hope if it is okay if she asks Doc out, given that she heard a rumor that their divorce is finally being filed. Not wanting to tell anyone about Doc and her being together again, Hope tells her that it was okay.

Jack goes to Mel’s cabin. She goes on to tell him that everything is too hard for her because Charmaine wants to be with Jack and that he has a chance to have a real family, and she doesn’t want to stand in the way. Jack tells her that he’s not in love with Charmaine and that if Mel tells him that she doesn’t care about him, he’ll leave her alone. On the other hand, Mel tells him that she does care, which is why she’ll finish her year at Virgin River and leave. Jack leaves after telling her he knows he’s right about them.

The next day at the clinic, Doc asks for a consult from Mel because Charmaine has hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness that qualifies her pregnancy as high-risk. Charmaine gets upset when Mel tells her she understands how she feels. Doc tells Charmaine she’ll be better off staying at Virgin River so they can monitor her closely. Mel leaves, and Charmaine walks out crying.

Jack finds Charmaine crying outside the bar and tells her she needs to apologize to Mel. Jack also tells her that he’s taking over her pregnancy and she was to allow Doc and Mel to take care of her.

Mel takes a jog and sees a suspicious man seemingly following her. Frightened, she changes her route and ends up in Jack’s bar. Jack apologizes to her on behalf of Charmaine and asks her to take Charmaine on as a patient. Mel says she’ll think about it.

At Hope’s, Doc was giving Hope a foot rub when he received a call from Mel, who wanted to talk to him about Charmaine. Hope tells Doc she thought it was Muriel asking Doc out after she told her he was single. Hope pushes Doc to go out with Muriel so she’ll not be suspicious that they are together again.

The following day, Mel goes to the Fitches’ to ask if they have room for her patient, but they tell her they are fully booked until the next month. She had no other choice but to ask Hope. At first, Hope wasn’t happy to let Charmaine stay at her house, but Mel told her that Jack might forgive her if she agreed, so she did.

Preacher and Paige meet as agreed, and she tells him how he physically abused her and how they hid everything from Christopher so he won’t be afraid of his dad. Preacher offers Paige to move in with him so they can be safe.

Brady comes to Jack, telling him that he has another job offer, but he’s willing to turn it down if he makes him the bar manager. Jack tells him that he doesn’t think he’s good enough for the job. He tells Jack he’s making a mistake and leaves.

Doc and Mel meet in a cafe, and Mel asks Doc’s opinion about Jack. He tells her that Jack never seemed to be serious with Charmaine, and when Mel came to Virgin River, Jack knew what was possible. He also tells her that the decision is on Jack and that he’s a grown man who can make his own decisions. He tells her she didn’t steal anything and that helping Charmaine despite the situation is a very honorable thing to do.

Preacher walks Paige back home, and before he leaves, Paige tells him that they’ll move in with him. Preacher left, feeling ecstatic. Paige goes to the backyard, where Christopher tells her that his dad is there. True enough, Wes comes out and says hi.

Preacher goes back into the bar and sees Jack sorting through applications and inventory. He tells him that maybe he should let Mel go and that maybe things were not meant to be between them. Jack tells him that he’s in love with her.

Mel is still in Doc’s clinic researching treatment plans even though it’s already late. She screams in fright when a man suddenly goes in from the backdoor.

Our Thoughts

That was quite an opening for Season 2! We finally know more about Paige’s past, and just when we thought things were going to be better since they’re moving in with Preacher, Wes comes into the picture. Oh, the timing was just so nice, or not. We’re bracing ourselves for what he’ll do to Paige, but we’re also getting ourselves ready for the complicated situation Mel, Jack, and Charmaine are going to get themselves into. Ugh, someone’s bound to get hurt, no matter how the situation ends. We still don’t get why Hope doesn’t want her relationship with Doc out in the open, but we’re certainly not looking forward to Doc’s date with Muriel. It will surely be awkward and uncomfortable for him. Oh, poor Doc!
